10 Reasons Trump Should Not Strengthen U.S.-Saudi Ties

Medea Benjamin

Donald Trump has selected Saudi Arabia as the destination for his first trip abroad, strengthening U.S. ties to a regime that is fueling the very extremism, intolerance and violence that the US government purports to eradicate. Here’s 10 reasons why the United States should not be closely allied with the Saudi kingdom.

Trump and his ilk live in a alternative universe where the 10 reasons you list would be their reasons for being for the Saudi's. When will we realize that a vast number of our leaders in the US are not for the things that most people find sane, reasonable and humane. They, like the Saudi elite, want to hold fear and hostility over the people at large to maintain their power. Why in the world would anyone with any kind of moral compass want Jeff Sessions as attorney general. Trump's moral compass is much more like that of the Saudi's than the rest of us. When will we the people put an end to the reign of people like Trump and the Saudi royal family?

If Trump doesn't sell this $100 billion worth of weapons to SA ... expected to grow to $300 billion in 10 years ... how is he going to stimulate the American economy? Which is also the reason he wants so-called NATO allies to spend more on weapons ... the USA ... and increasingly Canada and the UK have economies based on perpetual war. Understand this ... and ... this makes total sense.

Agreed, is there any truth to SA owning the biggest oil cache here in America?

but if it puts people to work, we have the worse morals of any civilization. We could make many jobs by doing renewables and clean up the messes worldwide from bombs and drones and ....... just by addressing climate change actively we could create millions of jobs. We don't need all this cheap shit from China and Asia and neither do they. They can go back to producing their needs locally or have we westernized the world to a point of no return.

Yes, he want to cut back on Amtrak when the rebuilding of America's rail network could create a lot of jobs and be a huge plus for the country.

All excellent points. One surprising statement, however, "The Saud family picks the king,..." Actually, the rule of succession in Saudi Arabia is perhaps even worse: The new king is the eldest, direct male descendant of Ibn Saud, the founder of this kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

It's always interesting to note the exact translation of the name of this country: Saud's Arabia. Sort of like if The USA was renamed Trump's America.

I appreciate all you and code pink do Medea, but even if there were 100 reasons that proved unequivocally, that Trump should not strengthen ties with one of the worst and evil regimes in the world, $$$$$$$$$$$$$$ trumps them all!
