14 Hours After Fascist Mob Stormed Capitol in Coup Attempt, 'Democracy Prevails' as Congress Officially Certifies Biden Win

Originally published at http://www.commondreams.org/news/2021/01/07/14-hours-after-fascist-mob-stormed-capitol-coup-attempt-democracy-prevails-congress

In August 2015 as I saw the raw and idiotic power of Trump’s ability to bully his political foes, I read Sinclair Lewis’ (1935) It Can’t Happen Here about a successful fascist challenge to FDR. Now we know IQ45 does not read, but perhaps he had a books-on-tape version below his pillow at night. His maladministration has played out according to the script with amazing fidelity. Yesterday’s antics were yet just more evidence of what fascism yields. All of those interlopers belong in jail. This is not a nation of mob rule. The stochastic-terrorist-in-chief must be removed will all dispatch.

Is it me or did it look like this “mob” met with very little resistance “storming” the Capitol? It’s almost as if it was welcomed.

Yes. Some are blaming on white versus non-white based protests. I think not. There was plenty of time after Trump’s speech to the crowd to protect the Capitol. And there was knowledge that Trump’s crowd was going to act on January 6 for some time.

There was official collusion, it seems indisputable. DC police were party to the coup attempt, at some level. The contrast between their treatment of fascist terrorists, versus peaceful BLM protesters, has spoken volumes into history’s archive. Inexplicably – in yet another gratuitous insult from those on the other side of that “thin blue line” – there have been very few arrests! (52, they say).

Police all over the country might wind up paying a price for the treachery of their DC brethren on January 6. They can’t squash all of us to death like George Floyd.

Incidentally: When do we start calling Schumer majority leader?

If that was a crowd of anti-war demonstrators, there’s no way they’d get near the Capitol.

“America has yet to achieve the promise of a true multiracial democracy, but that is the nation we must strive for.”

In that case, it should be clear that capitalism must go as it clearly fosters inequality. So, it is much more than eradicating the Electoral College and money in politics.

And all we need remember of FDRs brush with fascist interlopers is that they were some of the nations wealthiest men. And they got a pass. A get out of jail free card that no socialist protestor or union organizer up to that time, or since, has ever received.
If I know my Joe and Nancy and Chuck, and the newly nominated AG, Mr Milquetoast himself, Merritt Garland, this generations fascists will all walk away from this little kerfuffle scot-free as well.

Well stated. Just in case the American people hadn’t caught on yet, when the deal goes down, and the big business fascists rise, it should now be abundantly clear that our “friends” on the other side of the thin blue line will be standing with the Oligarchy.

I don`t think you know any of them - but your ad hom criticisms ring hollow anyway.

Now it is abundantly clear what these past democratic administrations have been dealing with - not policy disputes - but seditionists in both the House and the Senate.

This is in no way a kerfluffle- as you portray the democrats standing between you and an outright despot as unworthy.

In fact they are all that is left of democracy in your country, with the exception perhaps of a very few such as Mitt Romney and a few others.

And this term kerfluffle`` - ìs that meant to downplay what the entire world just watched - a complicit in some sense DC police force and a mob of white supremacy threatening the lives of the members of Congress ?

And protests spreading to other state capitols ?

This is not nearly over - not even close.

Half the electorate are brain dead - ignorant, stupid, racist, and in denial of science and even common sense.

This has nothing to do with capitalism, or globalization - this is the face of humanity worldwide - a few votes away from the law of the jungle - and there are no exceptions, anywhere.

It’s not you:

They did kill one unarmed middle-aged woman …

Change the outfits and replace the Trump flags with swastikas, and you have the SA, Hitler’s storm troopers. Yes, it can happen here.

If democracy had “prevailed,” we would be entering Sanders’ second term, and right winger Biden would be nowhere near the Oval Office. We will continue having scenes like yesterday, and worse, because our entire government, including the Democratic party, is not only entirely unanswerable to the voters, but hold voters in complete disdain. The only alternative to the status quo offered the people is right wing demagoguery. This was recently and abundantly made amply clear by AOC and the #fraudsquad who demonstrated they will not fight for you when the opportunity lends itself.

Trump has now cleverly evaded both a 25th Amendment action and impeachment by conceding - sorta.

Look at this paragraph from an ABC News story:

In a statement tweeted by White House Deputy Chief of Staff Dan Scavino following the news, Trump said: “Even though I totally disagree with the outcome of the election, and the facts bear me out, nevertheless there will be an orderly transition on January 20th. I have always said we would continue our fight to ensure that only legal votes were counted. While this represents the end of the greatest first term in presidential history, it’s only the beginning of our fight to Make America Great Again!”

Buried in the middle of yet another repetition of his bogus claim that he won the election is a statement that an “orderly transition” will occur.

ABC News generously interprets those words as a concession. The look-forward crowd and the 25th Amendment crowd will accept that interpretation and declare that the crisis is over. Trump will not be ousted by his cabinet, and impeachment will be “off the table”.

Will the Biden Administration prosecute Trump for inciting a mob to disrupt the final step of the Presidential election process or for pressuring the Georgia Secretary of State to “recalculate” 11,780 votes into the Georgia totals? Will the Georgia Republicans indict Trump for election tampering? I doubt it.

Maybe New York will prosecute Trump for some of his business and tax maneuvers, but Trump’s crimes against democracy will probably go unpunished - and in effect, condoned.

The only way to crush Trump and his Congressional accessories-in-crime is to impeach him and force Republican Senators to vote against impeachment despite the incontrovertible evidence of his guilt.

Tell your Critter to support Rep. Omar’s bill of impeachment.

No not you, security experts and military allies around the world saw the same thing you and I saw yesterday.

“Multiple European security officials told insider that President Trump appeared to have tactic support among US federal agencies responsible for securing the Capital complex in yesterday’s coup attempt.”

“We train alongside the US federal law enforcement to handle these very matters, and it’s obvious that large parts of any successful plan were just ignored.”

'Nother big chapter in the ongoing norte americano book of revelations.

Did someone say Mitt Romney? I hear he’s been trying to round-up a minority posse of useless eaters by offering free rides up & down Pennsylvania Avenue strapped to the hood of his hummer. Not that he would ever take a stand based on political optics rather than principle.

I think your right, although there has been calls from some Cabinet members for Pence to invoke the 25th, it’s likely Trump still has enough support in the Cabinet and Congress to guarantee it’s failure.
