During the past half century we have learned that “big brother” is the military industrial media infotainment complex (MIMIC) propaganda machine that has molded the minds of enough of the electorate to enable the successful fascist takeover that by 2020 will stack Federal Courts to the extent that it won’t matter who is seated in Congress…the 1% and their corporations will have any legislation they don’t like overturned by activist fascist judges.
“In an era of widespread deceit, telling the truth is considered a radical act” - George Orwell
My God Tom…I agree with everything you wrote, but by now, don’t we all know…there is really not anything any of us can do! The world is moving quickly into its final hours. It’s as though the plan was set in motion long ago and is now coming to fruition. When I see all the protests, the “new, young Progressives” in Congress (and how they are being sidelined), the independent media (what little of it there is), the writing of great books that lay out the step by step dystopian truth of how the world is descending into Armageddon, I see that very little appears to be changing for the better.
You rally us to a global action! What, aside from mass rebellion (and suicide), could that action possibly be? My heart and mind daily sit in despair as I read all the awful stuff happening in our world. My efforts, small as they may be, have been met with zero change.
It is psychically paralyzing to make effort and have no positive result from that effort. Sure, I may feel good for having written to my editor or called my representatives in Congress, or spoken to a group about the consequences of inaction, or even written a book about the impending destruction of civilization, but that is all that it is; a momentary feel good.
So…what global action were you thinking of?
Here in Canada, ‘Elections Canada’ has informed NGO’s and others that alluding to the climate crisis is now a partisan act, this being an election year, and one party, “The Peoples’ Party”, led by Maxime Bernier, denies the reality of man-made climate change - and so the restriction on bringing up this ‘climate crisis’ until the election is over on October 21, 2019.
Newspeak - made right here in Canada - I am still thinking I must have misread.
I was in fact going over our dystopian world just this am in the local java shop - Bolsanaro in Brazil. Poland, Hungary, the wedding bomb in Kabul (apparently Shia are aslo infidels), Russia, Trump, of course, and on and on.
This is the mundane world we inhabit, but there was one break from what I will call ‘mundanacity’ ~
Greta Thundberg on her way to the IPCC in America, taking a year off in fact from school.
Reminiscent of Lawrence of Arabia, she combines an ability second to none for the spectacular effect, on her zero carbon pilgrimage across a possibly hurricane-threatened Atlantic.
It is of course to know if this young woman can withstand the onslaught which will welcome her still unrealized arrival on the shores of America, but Cicero did consider “the greatness and strength of a noble invincible spirit” as one of the four moral rights. We shall see:
“Everything morally right derives from one of four sources: it concerns either full perception or intelligent development of what is true; or the preservation of organized society, where every man is rendered his due and all his obligations are faithfully discharged; or the greatness and strength of a noble, invincible spirit; or order and moderation in everything said and done, whereby there is temperance and self-control.” (Cicero)
I have read 1984 twice. Once in '71 in high school and again in '16. We are seeing it before our eyes as the world heads deeper into a dystopian nightmare. Another good read: Sinclair Lewis’s “It Can’t Happen Here”. Fascism is taking over from the already bad bourgeois ‘democracy’. Peace
We Progressives are all Winston Smiths; we know too much!
It already has, Ol’ Hippy, it already has. I saw the last act in this little drama at Bikini in 1956. There is a handful of us left that can bear witness to the horror of nuclear war. Most of us are becoming worn out, trying to convince We the People to wake up. The idiocracy in charge has no idea of what they may be unleashing. To them it is just another computer game, vaporize a large city and get 500 points! Far out! To them, Nuclear Winter is just a month or so of cloudy weather. Nothing to worry about.
When the fat one was getting his briefing at the Pentagon and he heard about our nuclear arsenal, his comment was, “If we’ve got all these bombs, why aren’t we using them?” When they got to the technical part of the briefing, he said he thought they were “really neat!”
I Have Seen the Dragon
I have seen the Dragon
Through clenched lids and arms pressed tight.
I have felt its hot breath on my back
And listened to the rumble of its voice.
I have looked upon its breath,
Glowing Amethyst, red and purple,
Climbing towards the stratosphere
To deposit its venom downwind.
I have waited in fear as my gums began to bleed
And my hair came out in clumps.
I breathed a prayer of thanks
As I began to heal.
After fifty years, our ranks are thin,
We who have seen the Dragon and survived.
Those who have died or are sickened still,
Their numbers are legion.
All we can hope for, work for, pray for,
Is that no madman will ever be allowed
To unleash the Dragon again.
For its legacy to all is death, disease and decay.

Now, 63 years.
If that statement by the insane one does not scare the hell out of you…NOTHING WILL!
Sorry for my negativity this morning. I just re-read some of my “Spiritual” aspirations and realize I am in a slump. It’s difficult to attempt to project positive energy into this world sometimes–especially when I’m feeling blue. Mea culpa.
The plunge into a dystopian future started when the economic system called Capitalism introduced. It assured a future where the only focus was money and getting more stuff.
The character name has been switched- General Jack Ripper is now the President.
Has everyone forgotten Greta Thundberg so soon ? Granted she is on a racing yacht, and she is young - so ??
I’ve been zeroed in on this climate thing for fourteen years now, exactly my son’s age. Tons has changed - I could give you a list, but I’m sure with a little reflection you know what I mean.
The aphorism is true:
“If you think you can, or you think you can’t - you’re right !”
What is actually happening is fear, as we approach those much talked about tipping points.
Not everyone is used to dealing with this type of fear, which is why ‘safe’ is the watchword of both conservatives and progressives.
It is difficult to comprehend how a sixteen year old could simply stand up in front of the entire world and speak the truth - Unite behind the Science !
Let’s get over that little hurdle, shall we ~
I wasn’t misreading - here it is on the BBC. Let’s all look North for a minute, and dispel any ideas that Canada’s political system is any more sane than America’s or Australia’s:
I hear you…You’re right.
Well if anything , the Canadian system does result in these looney toon groups scurrying off to form rump parties where the idiots like Bernier are exorcised from the maninstream parties.
I contrast Bernier and his “Peoples Party” leaving the Conservatives while in the US guys like this remainpart of the Repunlicans and even Democrats. This also works better when true Socialists will leave a Centrist party to form their own.
This tends to result in healthier Democracies.
Now as to elections Canada and their pronouncement , I am in concurrence with the David Suzuki . This pushing being non partisan to an extreme. Using this line of reasoning taking out an ad that is anti-war is being partisan.
“one of three great imperial superpowers left on planet Earth, goes down for the count at the hands of Big Brother. It was perhaps my third time reading it in my 75 years on this planet”
Read it once more. Oceania is not an imperial superpower, it’s a Socialist shithole ruled by a wannabe intellectual elite.
The video (linked above), courtesy of TED-Ed’s Noah Tavlin, provides an excellent primer on the difference between simply “authoritarian” and actually “Orwellian.” If we can apply this lesson to our present political situation – even in the current environment, which strongly discourages critical thinking and dissent – I would say that the last three presidents have been authoritarian, in practice. But the worst Orwellian tendencies of our government have grown each year following 9/11 — making President Barack Obama, ironically, more Orwellian, in practice, than his predecessor, whose authoritarian excesses Obama was elected to reverse.
It was, after all, President Obama, whose brilliant use of language made it possible to continue torturing “folks” (including American whistleblowers) and unleashing CIA-armed/trained Salafist terrorist “rebels” on the world (continuing Bush’s monstrous, post-OIF, “Redirection“)… to the effect that hundreds of thousands of Muslims were killed on his watch. And most Americans didn’t even fucking notice, even with the resulting greatest flood of refugees in recorded human history. Most believed that the neocon agenda had been rolled back… when it actually had been dramatically expanded (look at what’s happened to JSOC… and Yemen! during the Obama years).
That is Orwellian, indeed.
And even more to the point, it was President Obama who effectively repealed habeas corpus and turned due process-free assassination of Americans uncharged with crimes (and their children) into the “targeted killing of terrorists” (the kid should’ve had “a more responsible father” — IMAGINE IF THAT ZINGER HAD COME OUT OF TRUMP’S ADMINISTRATION!).
We should never forget that it was Barack Obama who championed and signed into law the worst provisions of the 2012 and 2016 NDAAs, which, respectively: ended Posse Comitatus and repealed the Smith-Mundt Act, the longstanding prohibition against propagandizing the American people (2012); and authorized a veritable Ministry of Truth (2016), creating a government office to determine which news is “real” and which is allegedly “fake” (from now on, everything that contradicts the state’s propaganda is officially fake news , thanks to President Obama… with a little anonymized assist from PropOrNot and the neo-fascist hacks at the Washington Post).
As many close observers have noted in recent years, by doubling down on the most authoritarian of the Bush/Cheney policies, President Obama put in place everything that a would-be dictator could possibly desire, including a surveillance system that would make Big Brother greenly envious. Trump doesn’t need to change a thing, when it comes to the legal framework and lethal programs he’s inherited. Obama did it for him. Nixon’s theory of the Unitary Executive, once considered terrifying and radical, is now the respected, consensus opinion in Washington.
I understand that some people reading this might actually like/admire Barack Obama and imagine him to be liberal — so did I, once — but we on the left have to reconcile ourselves to history if we’re to have any chance of opposing Orwellian authoritarianism, under any president: http://invitation2artivism.com/?p=1491
Principle, not partisanship, must guide us. If not, our efforts are doomed to fail.
To Dr. Strangelove!
Don’t they realize that nearly everything now has partisan overtones? So who gets to pick and choose what is or isn’t partisan? Not the citizenry I fear.
Canada aside for a moment, every time we let trump slide with one of his bullcrap mini-fits, a new normal is being allowed to sneak in the back door.
The principled are the minority. Minorities are finding it harder and harder to cope with a fascist leaning oligarchy.
We may have to grow our future presidents from petri dishes so that we get the preferred DNA.
OOps, that sounds a bit 1940’s .
