98.3% of Ghana's Gold Remains in the Hands of Multinational Corporations

Celina della Croce

Every year, the vast majority of Ghana’s natural wealth is stolen. The country is among the largest exporters of gold in the world, yet—according to a study by the Bank of Ghana—less than 1.7 percent of global returns from its gold make their way back to the Ghanaian government. This means that the remaining 98.3 percent is managed by outside entities—mainly multinational corporations.

When a neoliberal pulls an arrow from his quiver you can bet that it will be aimed at a leader with the genuine interests of his people at heart.

I gave an example of how this works in an article describing the Mineral wealth in Haiti. The article was from a mining journal but if one reads between the lines it about the opportunities for mining Companies to make tremendous profits in Haiti and it couched in the guise of doing this so as to help the people of Haiti out of poverty.

It then goes on to describe how past Governments (read Aristide) were reluctant to turn that Mineral wealth over to the Foreign Mining Companies and how this has all been addressed with the new Government.

That is all you have to know as to why there was a Coup there and why one in the works in Venezuela. The Multinational Mining Companies and Oil Companies want to plunder those Countries of their wealth so as to fatten the pocketbooks of the already wealthy. They are thieves and that in essence is how Capitalism functions. It steals the wealth of others under the guise of “Private property” and “investment”

This is an excellent article on the matter.

Hi nighthawk:
I read that the UK has Venezuela’s gold—and so why do we have a UN that can’t seem tp get things done in terms of protecting people and countries from the bully nations?
If that’s the way its going to be, then once again, I call for the UN to dissolve ----and that the UN building be made into low cost housing that people can afford. It can become renamed as the United Citizens Building.

Because the world’s biggest bully has a permanent seat on the U.N. Security Council.

Hi nighthawk:.
Maybe it would be a good thing if all the nations skipped the UN and went back to meeting in the Hague. It would be intriguing to see if America kept acting the bully in another house. Oh the irony, as it appears that America and Israel have become the twin bullies that Germany once was as a solo act.

Thank you for printing this, CD. There are more than just a handful of countries in the world.

NATO would be one group to look at if you compare meeting places. They meet in Belgium. Compassionate and world-friendly group, huh?

Hi Helene—
Horrors, NATO? Remember they brought cholera to Haiti, denied it— and did nothing to help Haitians. : (
