“The Green New Deal we are proposing will be similar in scale to the mobilization efforts seen in World War II or the Marshall Plan… Half measures will not work… The time for slow and incremental efforts has long past [sic].” - Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, then-candidate for the U.S. House of Representatives, Huffington Post, June 26, 2018
Excellent call-to-action Ronnie! As we proceed making a genuine Green New Deal THE issue of the 2020 elections, we would do well to remember that there is a big difference between renewable energy sources and zero-emission energy. Ethanol, for example, has a too-large carbon footprint. The problem is not depletion of irreplaceable fossil fuels. The problem is burning carbon. No question, though, that managing agriculture for carbon sequestration is crucial.
Let’s not forget, the Green Party USA developed the Green New Deal almost a decade ago. Thankfully, the concept is going mainstream, but everyone leaves out where it was developed and given legs - The Greens!
What I’d like to see is a movement to educate the public using community facilities such as libraries, schools and community gardens.
I am thrilled that our community garden just begun our third year and is growing in resources and community outreach.
Permaculture and Transition Towns are two such movements, and of interest.
