At a time where ‘resilience’ seems to be the new buzzword on the tip of everyone’s tongue, one of Somalia’s most resilient systems – remittances – is hanging by a thread.
Having fewer children would be a good start in every way. Of course, in part that depends on having governments that promote rather than prevent limiting reproduction.
This is not a new problem, nor specific to Somalia. Every fundy country where women’s main role is baby-factory has had or has this same system. Ireland, Italy, Poland, and the RC parts of the Americas. It’s a disaster.
The only truly humane system, today, is to set up support pipes only to families where reproduction has stopped, or will stop after one child.
