A Most Unhappy New Year at Guantanamo

Amy Goodman, Denis Moynihan

As the clock counts down to the New Year and the world welcomes 2016, another clock will continue ticking, counting the days, hours, minutes and seconds since May 23, 2013, the day President Barack Obama promised to free all those prisoners at the U.S. base at Guantanamo Bay who have been cleared for release.

That clock was created by independent journalist Andy Worthington, and is on the Internet at gtmoclock.com. Jan. 22, will mark the seventh anniversary of the day Obama signed Executive Order 13492, ordering the closure of the Guantanamo Bay prison within one year.

This development shows how far the military coup ruling the US has taken over control of the government of the US.
Military prosecutors have declared these prisoners cannot be prosecuted even by the tortured kangaroo court rules of the military and what changes?--absolutely nothing. Barry issues an executive order demanding the release of these prisoners going on 7 years ago and what has changed?--absolutely nothing.
The civilian government to which the military-security establishment is supposed to be subservient has shown itself to be a paper tiger and has been so since November 22, 1963.
Their control is so complete that they don't even have to assert it very much--it runs on autopilot--like the organized crime "protection" rackets that used to suck the life out of immigrant neighborhood small business, you give the miitary what it wants or unfortunate "accidents" suddenly cross the path of your life.
Ike correctly diagnosed the disease destroying the US (the military, industrial, congressional complex) and nobody has yet to find a cure for this malignancy.
