A Progressive Alternative to Trump’s Dangerous Venezuela Policy

A Progressive Alternative to Trump’s Dangerous Venezuela Policy

Jon Rainwater

The Trump administration’s recent moves on Venezuela have so many historical echoes it’s a veritable déjà vu layer cake. The appointment of Elliot Abrams as U.S. Special Envoy to Venezuela last week was the icing on the cake. Abrams is an unrepentant interventionist, notorious for being found guilty for his role in the Iran-Contra scandal. But he also guided U.S. policy towards supporting genocide in Guatemala under Reagan, was the architect of the Panama invasion under George H.W.

A well written piece by Jon Rainwater, but it’s not likely his view will prevail in a Congress owned by oil companies and military industrial complex fans.

The pattern of behavior of the US in overthrowing legitimately elected governments is well established over decades, from Central and South America to the Mideast and eastern Europe where our puppet governments rule.

US history in Latin America has been similar to running a pet bull through a china shop and then charging the owner for the damage as it assumes opaque ownership of the shop. Bumblefuck Bolton is the bull…

there is no diplomatic path to anything. they’ve been trying that for twenty years. the “opposition” ha no interest in anything other than complete control of their country and its assets for their own personal wealth. they aren’t stopping for anything less, which is why there’s a coup attempt every few years.

It’s getting increasingly annoying reading “progressive” writers who are utterly clueless about the nature of oligarchy in general. this isn’t a clash between honest differences of opinion. It’s a clash about ownership—do the people own a country or do its elites?

Maduro has to make a difficult decision: he either surrenders to this pressure in order to make it stop or he eliminates the source of it. Those are the only viable options he’s being given, the same as the rest of LA/SA’s pink leaders. The ones that didn’t understand how stark this choice really was are all out of power or in prison right now.

It’s them. Or it’s us. There is no middle ground.

If progressives actually exist in these terrorist war hungry united states, they will surely agree that no progress can be made in Venezuela until until war hungry democrats use their congressional majority to end the economic war on Venezuela.

Democrats thirst for war world-wide and blame the Rs for their own perversions. Tulsi Gabbard is the only democratic candidate campaigning to end regime change wars.

The 2020 presidential contest is between Tulsi Gabbard and None of the Above.

To see that the total foreign policy incompetents Bolton and Abrams are to lead this assault is a sign of the continuing degradation of our country’s morals.

Rainwater sez:
“Polls show that a large majority of Venezuelans — including many of those who oppose Maduro — oppose foreign military intervention to remove Maduro.”

Doesn’t matter what a “large majority of Venezuelans” want. A democratic election was held and Chump, Bolton, Munchkin and Rubio unanimously elected a new leader:

Heil President Abrams!

Exactly, pretending these coups are a mistake is just denial. They are not, and work out perfectly for those who support them, just not so well for the indigenous populations, as planned.

I guess the US Corporate Reich doesn’t need excuses any more. Tonkin Gulf, WMDs, none of that is needed. Don’t even need to say “Lebensraum.” Gosh, propaganda used to be so hard!

Good article, but It once again joined this creeping re-definition of the word “radical” to mean “violent extremist”, rather than its original definition “one who seeks the roots of things”.

We’re told that the Iraq war failed, and the neocons like Bolton must be nuts to think otherwise. But if your goal was to weaken or remove an obstacle to Israel then it, like Syria, was a success. If ruining Iran means removing an obstacle to Israel, then for them, a trashed Iran would be a success.

If you goal in Venezuela is to convince the American people and the world that socialism (social programs for more equity) does not work, then the sanctions have been doing great. If the goal is to privatize its oil with good opportunities for American companies, starving people don’t matter; can only help to get the regime change that will advance this objective. If democracy runs counter to these goals, then the last thing the neocons want is democracy. The “freedom” the neocons want is the freedom of the market - neoliberalism works great for sucking wealth out and up - if that requires a dictator, so be it.

Bottom line, the neocons goals are selfish, and if you don’t realize this they appear to be failures all over the place, unwilling to learn from history. They are not concerned with the interests of the intervened foreign country or its people: expressions of interests to the contrary are bullshit.

The progressive alternative is to get out and let elected Venezuelans run the country.

“Estamos con ustedes” Pence’s slogan was presented a little too bluntly, it seemed more like a threat than a show of support. His slogan voice sounds like Darth Vader. Anybody else notice that?

This idea is spelled wonderfully by John Perkins in his book Confessions of an Economic Hit Man." You can find his speech on the topic but the book lets you take it in and absorb the years much better.

That’s one way of looking at it. Try European Racism instead, possibly. Or, inequality in redistribution of Venezuela’s natural resources.
All of Europe is racist to an extent. Which bleeds into their Catholicism and certainly into all Protestant religions; they both gained economic power through slavery and expropriation from brown people.
The racist missionary zeal runs as deep into religious oppression as money, " convert and be slaves or die " is still in our midst.
Judaism doesn’t escape this plague, either.

Wall Street and other empires want Venezuela’s resources. They will “make the economy scream” if they don’t get what they want, in an inverted socialism for the rich. The Ruling Class sees itself as the anointed, with the knowhow to keep the ignorant masses in line else there will be chaos. By all the global chaos, it proves itself to be only human and stupid despite its hoarded wealth, titles and infamy. It doesn’t realize that the earth is a paradise if we manage it correctly. That it can provide for all in the biosphere. That we don’t have to die to get to paradise.

I think you mean “their” market. The market they control like rigging the roulette wheel in the Wall Street Casino.

Skin tone explanations are difficult to imagine today. Unless you are a genius brown skinned student pursuing a doctoral degree; Does the united states sound like off-campus fun? Would you rather learn to speak chinese, german, iranian, spanish or russian?

Hugo Chavez was a poor young person the army offered a scholarship. He went on to invent a remarkable five branch government and an inviolable voting system.

Capitalists who pollute wish to erase Hugo’s legacy for assigning responsibility for environmental collapse.

The experts in this problem are cost accountants. How much does lax regulation of factory drug packing lines contribute to opioid death and destruction? For one example.
