A Real Democracy: Occupation By Irish Rough Sleepers, Activists, Unions and Artists Creates Collective Home Sweet Home

In a citizens’ "act of defiance" aimed at rescuing the homeless from Dublin's cold wet streets, a radical coalition of housing activists, homeless people, trade unionists and hundreds of volunteers have taken over an empty office building and turned it into housing for about 40 people. The direct action behind Apollo House and the public support for it, organizers say, reflects a re-awakened sense of social justice in a country battered by austerity, inequality and growing homelessness - one in which, "People are leading where the Government has failed."

Every time I see abandoned Walmart or grocery, usually because they are filling in wet lands to build a bigger one, I think that the town or city should force the owners to heat and light it and turn it into at least temporary winter shelters.

Why does it take an "occupation' or riot or other acts of desperation TO BRING ATTENTION TO THE PAIN AND SUFFERING of so many while the "haves" leave their manses/castles in Ireland for their long holidays in the Mediterranean or South Pacific? It is no different here in the US...look at any street in a major metropolis across the nation yet the emperor-elect wants to INCREASE MILITARY SPENDING to show the world our NUCLEAR MIGHT? For every T-dump tower built around the world, it should be mandated that the emperor- of-all-that-is-orange construct high rise housing for ALL homeless complete with furniture, linens, appliances, and weekly grocery deliveries along with job training programs for all occupants who are able.

That would be a true, abiding expression of loving-kindness.
