A Significant Step Forward on the Road to Reform

Karen Dolan

Weldon Angelos is a young father who wouldn’t have been able to be in his two children’s lives until he was 80 and his children were old and grey themselves. Angelos made mistakes and sold some marijuana. Because he also happened to have a gun in his possession, he got a 55 year mandatory minimum sentence.

I agree. This is a baby step in the right direction, but this system needs rebuilding, not reforming. The US prison system is an outgrowth of the slave system, which is history most people forget or never knew. The privatization of it is like a return to the plantation for the inmates. When Congress begins debate of restorative justice practices compared to mass incarceration for all, then we'll know they're serious about justice.

Now you know how we vegetarians feel about environmental groups. They take "lame assed baby steps, token efforts" when much more important steps need to be taken. As I have said many times, they dance around the periphery, working on the edges of the problem while ignoring the center of the problem which is agribusiness. Scientists now tell us that over half of all greenhouse gases come from that industry, the animal slaughter industry. Therefore, using more efficient lightbulbs, driving more fuel-efficient cars, and marching in the streets holding signs that say down with fossil fuels is simply not doing enough. Thank you for pointing out your frustration with these nominal reforms to the criminal justice system. Now perhaps you can better understand why we vegetarians are so frustrated with the large environmental groups.
