Activists Unfurl 'Refugees Welcome' Banner on Statue of Liberty

Nadia Prupis, staff writer

Activists scaled the base of the Statue of Liberty on Tuesday to unfurl a massive banner reading "Refugees Welcome" across the observation deck.

The 20-foot red-and-white banner was up from roughly 12:45pm to just before 4:00pm, when the National Park Service tore it down.

"The New Colossus"

Not like the brazen giant of Greek fame,
With conquering limbs astride from land to land;
Here at our sea-washed, sunset gates shall stand
A mighty woman with a torch, whose flame
Is the imprisoned lightning, and her name
Mother of Exiles. From her beacon-hand
Glows world-wide welcome; her mild eyes command
The air-bridged harbor that twin cities frame.
"Keep, ancient lands, your storied pomp!" cries she
With silent lips. "Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door!"
Emma Lazarus, 1883"

Love the banner! I would like to see another one that says: RETURN TO SENDER!

Hey Trump, that's Lady Liberty flipping you the Bird!

How odd that the poem and Lady Liberty herself represent open immigration to so many today, yet that poem and the construction of the statue was during enforcement of the Chinese Exclusion Act (which was quite popular in its own time)!
