‘American Terrorist': Middle East reacts to Murder of 3 Muslim-American Students in N Carolina

Juan Cole

If American mass media seemed reluctant to cover the murder of three Muslims students at the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill as a hate crime, the same was not true in the Middle East, where strong opinions were aroused.

Turkish president Tayyip Erdogan criticized President Barack Obama and Vice President Joe Biden for not speaking out on the issue (which is under investigation by local police and the FBI).

Does anyone think this would be treated as a parking related incident if he'd killed three Jewish people?

If he'd killed black people, there's a fair chance it would have been called self-defense. Ditto for spanish speakers.

Women are killed in this nation on a daily basis, a lot of it the fruit of domestic abuse. Your post provokes anti-Semitic kneejerk responses. You could just as well say that if 3 white male heads of corporations, the Koch Brothers, The Waltons, Pete Petersen, or any number of heads of banks or corporate media were gunned down, THEN the response would be different.

You formerly commented in fair and balanced ways on the subject of the Middle East. Today's comment is purposefully inflammatory.

American Indians have fared no better than blacks or Muslims (or others for that matter. Anyone recall how the Japanese were treated during WW2? They lost everything and were decades getting an apology: Wow.) The U.S. is the most intolerant of others, even our own. It is something Americans seem to believe their God demands.
