Americans United Joins ACLU In Filing Lawsuit to Block Voucher Program That Would Fund Religious Schools In Nevada

WASHINGTON - Three civil liberties organizations filed suit today in Nevada District Court to challenge a school voucher program signed into law in June by Gov. Brian Sandoval.

The American Civil Liberties Union of Nevada, the American Civil Liberties Union and Americans United for Separation of Church and State sued on behalf of a group of parents, clergy and other taxpayers who oppose the program’s effort to divert taxpayer money to private, religious schools.

Perhaps Gov. Sandoval should consider a career in the church rather than force his religion on Nevadans as a governor. Maybe he will lose the next election to a lawful candidate, one that respects separation of church and state.

Students in religious schools grow up to be US citizens and contribute to the general welfare just like those who go to public schools. That is the purpose of our educational systems. That the students receive religious instruction as well as instruction just as public school children do seem something we should applaud, not condemn. Parents of such children should receive the same benefit from their tax dollars as parents who send their children to public schools. The history of the current discriminatory policy goes back to the nativists in the nineteenth century who feared an invasion of immigrants and their influence on America. The Blaine Amendments which denied support to religious was imbedded in state constitutions. Plain and simple, it is bigotry disguised as something noble. Now the opposition comes from the public education establishment and stems from the fear it will lose students and power.

Nonsense. Separation of Church and State is the issue.
