Amid Trump's Chilling War on Media, Press Freedom Groups Expose Threats to US Journalists

Julia Conley, staff writer

The Committee to Protect Journalists and the Freedom of the Press Foundation are among more than 20 groups partnering to introduce a new website which tracks threats to press freedom in the United States.

When these people start talking about the murder of Michael Hastings, I’ll start listening.

The 99% has no money and power to get things done. Trump knows that only the 1% can and puts them in office to oppress the 99%. Take the power back.

While this is a much needed tracker for the forthcoming impeachment,
Can we add a much more needed category for tracking?

Namely the category which counts the number of times
The Press fails to Question Authority

How many times has the press corp failed to ask the pink elephant question everyone knows.
Why the lead up to the Iraq Afghan included not just juvenile questions, the press actually
provided false reports cheerleading the invasion

Had the present elite of the press actually done their job we would not have these attacks upon journalists.

Had the press actually done their job we wouldn’t have the current president

Sorry you WH press corp suck ups, No Pictures.
Duh OK, not a problem.

Maybe the data of physical attacks on their profession will finally get them off their butts, out of their master’s laps and into really doing a critical examination of what constitutes Truth instead of marketable sound bites

This is very dangerous because of the Facebook newsfeed. It is now possible for an authoritarian like Trump and his supporters to provide millions of people with false news without them knowing it. Before Facebook if people wanted to find out the news they basically had to go to some sort of established media with editors who could weed out stuff that was clearly false. Editors and journalists have the ability to check out stories. Facebook bypasses all that. What news that a person receives is determined by an algorithm. The algorithms are often changed by programmers. Supposedly most people interface with the internet using Facebook and Google. The right wing has worked to get fake news on Facebook newsfeeds and their websites listed at the top of Google searches. This is undermining democracy and probably played a big role in allowing an autocrat to be elected president. Unless more is done in the digital area to prevent those with autocratic views from controlling the news it is likely the democracy in the US may not survive. This is a major threat and a completely new kind of threat that the Founding Fathers could never have anticipated.

Let’s be clear - the entire establishment media is fake news. It’s not a Republican or Trump only thing. I’m still new here but I’m getting this site may be some sort of pro Hillary thing that I should run from.
Are those of us who Dem-exited during the primaries allowed here?

#7

Let’s be clear. That is plain nuts. Trump says the press is the enemy of the people. That is also nuts.

Your referring to The Queen of DeLiCia? Please refrain from usung her first name. That could put you on a plane out of here for a tough weekend of questioning. It’s not a black site, more graphite slate with just a hint of a smokey patina. The furnishing are sparse modern industrial, but comfortable. So, now you’ve been warned.

Excellent summation, rolson.

Helen Thomas asked real questions on behalf of the American People, and was Blackballed for her efforts.

In a communication with her, before her passing, she acknowledged my pointing out the complete absence of Follow Up Questions by her compatriots, when a previous reporter’s question was sidestepped.

Actually, with regard for the vast majority of the corporate media- from owners, senior edititors on down, it’s demonstrably true- and has been for two decades at least.

That Trump ‘says so’ for all the wrong reasons doesn’t make the ultimate conclusion any different.

We could go through hundreds- even thousands of examples as to how and why.
