AMLO and Trump: NAFTA Best Friends Forever?

Sujata Dey

“I send you affectionate hugs,” writes Mexican President-elect Andrés Manuel López Obrador in a letter to U.S. President Trump, “We will put our voters and citizens at the center and displace the establishment.”

“Thank you for your kind letter. A strong relationship will lead to a much stronger and more prosperous Mexico which, frankly would make me very happy!” answers Trump back in another letter.

I hope AMLO makes the Mexican people proud of him by saying what he means. If he turns things around, he will improve Mexico’s standard of living.

AMLO means well, but he has some neo-liberal advisors that may redirect his efforts. One advisor worked under Vicente Fox, named Carlos Urzua, and has said that no increase in taxes is necessary. This does not bode well. Mexico has the highest inequality of all OECD nations, and the lowest tax rate, 17% of GDP. The U.S. taxes 26%, the OECD average is 34%, and France taxes at 46%.

También advirtió que no se requiere elevar impuestos, al asegurar que con fiscalización y monitoreo se puede mejorar la base tributaria.
This is Urzua, “Also he noted that it would not be required to elevate taxes, . . . just broaden the tax base.”
From this article: http://www.elfinanciero.com.mx/nacional/politica-economica-y-social-de-amlo-es-viable-y-necesaria-cepal ------ This is neo-liberal jargon for “rich people, don’t worry.” So, we don’t know. AMLO may have to raise taxes and act like the progressive he is at heart. I hope he does.

A country needs more than a good president. You need an entire society to change it for the better.

AMLO is another well-meaning progressive who has already been squelched.

But let’s see…
