Arne Duncan's Attack on Los Angeles Public Teachers Shows He Doesn't Care About Real Student Needs

Jesse Starkey

Literally tens of thousands of Los Angeles public schoolteachers and support staff are on strike this week, demanding that the wealthy elites who run LA’s school district address the desperate need for more resources and supports for their students. But just weeks before the strike began, former U.S.

Duncan has always been as delusional as Mitt Romney. In his little corner of the world everybody can afford private schools.
I wonder what the little people are doing today…?

Duncan’s entire purpose, precisely in the vein of Mitt Romney, is to insert into the institutional infrastructure, in this particular case, in public education, the criteria applied to “leveraged buyouts”. Plain and simple. Both could be included in the definition of “mole” (with deepest apologies and pardons with respect to the tiny little four-leggeds, the burrowing actions and eye-less state of which inspired the slang term).

Mitt Romney first slathered himself in Mormon self righteousness while he gleefully sucked the life out of entire regions by the sleight-of-hand financialization widget of leveraged buyout. He then proceeded to move out of his native state of Mass. to shed his skin, like the snake-oil salesman he is, for the revolving door opening onto Utah.
Keep an eye out in case he tries to stick it on the roof of his car and whip it out to one of his off-shore accounts.

Duncan is quite the accomplice to the current head of the Dept of Ed. mmmhmm a Chicago School bot with media legs.

Where are the d-party apologists to tell that there is indeed a dime’s worth of difference between Duncan and his silver spoon ilk and Betsy DeVos.

There’s a reason why the military is basically run by enlisted NCO’s (non-commissioned officers), they’ve been there, done that, starting at the bottom and working they’re way up the ladder. Good commissioned officers understand this, let the NCO’s do their job unimpeded, and allow input from them before any major (no pun intended) changes take place. Great commissioned officers understand this, train with the troops, and try to learn from their more experienced NCO’s.
My point is, this should also apply to other work settings most of the time. I have no doubt the best school administrators were once teachers, who know what’s needed to solve any given situation that comes up in the system they function in, and also relies on their experienced teachers for valuable input to solve problems. Installing an administrator without these skills is a recipe for disaster, much like LA public school system is experiencing as we speak.

A fifth rate “professional” basketball player who undoubtedly has financial interests in charters with NO teaching experience (Betsy Devos?) wants to dictate his fucked up opinion (and THAT’S all it is) to destroy public education. Another reason to tell Obama “fuck you”.

Arne Duncan, a window into Obama’s soul.

Duncan always supported the charter schools, but just isn’t as nutty as Devious.

Obama needs to shut up and finally realize that his time with us citizens is done.

HI Wise Owl, and I think that Obama went to a private high school in Hawaii too. Of course, his kids didn’t go to public schools either, and so I doubt that he actually cares about education either. I am not sure what he really cares about----but it’s not immigrants, or ending wars, or treating all the People fairly-----because really, why did he give the banks all that money again, after they had stolen it in the first place. And yes, in retrospect, the Peace Prize people regret, regret, regret-----that peace prize. : (

Well Tom, you’re usually right, so if the systems have changed, unions and the military, that’s a sad state of affairs. I admit it’s been quite a while since I was involved with either system, but the old way worked very well, hard to believe the powers that be, were ignorant enough to change it.

There is no difference other than Obama’s appointments had to pose as a left of center Democrat. The fact is both Duncan and Obama are Vichy Democrats.

When you elect a “New Democrat” you are preserving the legislative goals of Third Way. The only difference between Third Way and the Republicans is in “social issues” like gay rights and abortion. Those issues are carefully preserved to maintain the illusion that there is an opposition party. There is no opposition party!

Risky financial speculation, war and war preparation and the privatization of the public realm are the only investment opportunities that Finance Capital perceives as providing a safe and adequate return on investment today. People like Duncan (or politicians in general) don’t serve the general public, he serves the 1% of the 1%.
The privatization of public schools (charters) represents $ Billions to them.

For someone who is or was a longtime member of a “socialist” organization, the ISO, you’d think that the word class would be mentioned. Duncan, “our” elected representatives are the class enemies of working people. Do you think that the militants of the 1930’s CIO would say “please Mr. Capitalist, be nicer to us”? There’s a deeply lopsided class war being waged and Starkey didn’t mention it. Is Starkey a member of the “labor aristocracy”? Randi Weingarten (NEA pres) makes $500k a year for example…

Who is Jesse Sharkey? I must have missed something in my old age.

I do not understand how President Obama could have supported someone whose main goal as Secretary of Education was to destroy America’s 370 year old system of public education. I suspect Mr. Duncan is a big fan of Betsy DeVos, whose goal is the same.

My own unlamented ex-Governor, Susan Martinez, was another one with a similar goal. Her position was purchased for her by the Koch Brothers, and she did a pretty good job of starving our public education system down to the bottom of the states’ ranking. She spent way too much money and other resources on expensive standardized testing designed to reduce learning to rote memorization of limited information and made no effort at all to teach New Mexico’s children how to think! She was also a proponent of our largely underperforming charter schools. And she didn’t stop at destroying public education. But that is for another day.
