Artificial Morality

Artificial Morality

Robert C. Koehler

Artificial Intelligence is one thing. Artificial morality is another. It may sound something like this:

“First, we believe in the strong defense of the United States and we want the people who defend it to have access to the nation’s best technology, including from Microsoft.”

"Talking about “Artificial Intelligence”, here’s a perfect example of that…"

Good stuff PB.

we refuse to create technology for warfare and oppression.

My first thought was that this was partly a political statement, in that most Microsoft workers are not assigned to the IVAS project, but those working on other projects might be making the seemingly moot declaration either out of solidarity or because not enough people appointed to the IVAS project were taking such a stand.

Then, when Smith countered that those workers could be placed on other projects unrelated to the military, I realized that such a declaration would be more than solidarity–Microsoft isn’t an aggregate of departments and projects, it is one single behemoth. It makes sense not just to stymie the IVAS project but to shut down all of Microsoft until it decides to forego the contract.
