As DefCon Begins, Child Hackers Ready to Crack US Voting Systems (Because Adult Hackers Find It Just Too Easy)

Andrea Germanos, staff writer

At the DEF CON hacker conference, which officially kicked off on Thursday, kids as young as 8 will target replicas of election results reporting sites—because it would just be too easy for adult hackers to do it.

It's part of a competition taking place Friday and Saturday at the gathering's Voting Village—which organizers rolled out for the first time last year—where "the entire voting infrastructure" will go under hackers' scrutiny.

At this year's Voting Village, 8- to 16-year-old hackers will try to exploit the resource media rely on for election results as they come in.

They sure look like Rooskies to me. Nuke 'em!

#3

Bring back paper ballots with X marks the vote. No chads.

#4

My suspicion that elections can and will be rigged has thus been validated…

It wouldn’t be the first time US paramilitary had paid minors to hack voting machines.

But of course that’s not what’s happening at DefCon, a very public forum despite and in part because of its private interests.

It is conceivable that the US government wishes to create eventual recruits, since it has largely depleted its stable over a generation or so of centralizing control over distributed communications.

Old guards get older.

But it seems most likely that someone here actually wants to send a benign message. Yes, folks, digital voting machines are very, very easy to manipulate. Paper ballots can and have been miscounted, too, but they cannot simply be changed to any believable number in a second at a mouse or keyboard.

The truth is that digital voting machines are so easy to manipulate that it’s a bit silly worrying so much about their being hacked–that is, entered from outside. What’s easier than getting past a password? Having the password. And that’s only one reason that almost all security problems are inside jobs.

The people we need to worry about taking over the system are already inside it. Return to paper. Make them steal elections manually.

That proposal, despite it being elegant in its common sense, is tantamount to heresy. The hard line is the linear death drag ALWAYS “ADVANCING”(sic). The fully rational, do-able, logical use of paper ballots would be pulling back the curtain on the “wizard” of Oz. the bullshit swampers are wallowing too deep in dollars.
Could you imagine if ALL local grass roots got petitions signed demanding it, THAT would a sight for sore eyes.

Why is there NO DISCUSSION ABOUT THIS??
the most devastating election theft mechanism yet found, with context and explanation.

Think back and ponder this, when was the last legitimate national election held in the USA?
Maybe 1964? That was perhaps the last year that didn’t feature some sort of chenanigans, illegal and otherwise, that swayed the election. Both parties that year, for the most part, were pretty up front with their views on how America should be and how it should conduct itself. Both parties had pro and anti war factions. Both featured pro and anti civil rights groups as well. But in the end it was a pretty straight up fight between those that supported progressive causes and wanted to move forward, and conservatives, who just wanted the old white Eurocentric American status quo to be preserved. Progressives won that election at nearly every level by a nearly 2/3rds to 1/3rd majority. A landslide by any measure.
That’s why there hasn’t been a Legitimate election since. The wealthy power brokers of this nation had seen enough. The masses were to put in their place once and for all. The nation was balkanized as whites circled the wagons following the passage of the civil rights act. The Vietnam war and union labor drove a stake into the hearts of the counterculture movement, as the power brokers of the Democratic Party chose suicide over inclusion. The youth vote was chased away at the same time Dixiecrats abandoned their old party because they just couldn’t live in an America where minorities has the same opportunities as them. Most of the civil rights and anti war leadership were jailed or assassinated. Then the summer of 68 witnessed the Democratic Party eating its own in Chicago and all but handing the nation to the brutal racist thug Nixon.
Every election since then has reeked of illegitimacy. From the watergate break in, to the Ford debacle, to the secret deals between Iran and the Reagan campaign, to the abandonment of Mondale by the demcrats, to Perots self financed third party war to destroy the Bush family, to his same effort to kill the Dole campaign, to Florida in 2000, Ohio in 2004, the GOP serving up McCain like a rancid Christmas goose. To gerrymandering and vote fixing in 2010, and of course 2016.
Depending on where you vote, it may not be counted. Or it may be switched. And there is no guarantee that it didn’t happen, and won’t happen again. Confidence in the System has been all but destroyed. And in the end, isn’t that what it was all about in the first place?

#9

Easy? Why dont you put up a Tutorial so we can learn how and all get invloved?

#10

I believe Nikita Kruschev once said that voting decides nothing, while those who count the votes decide everthing.

You could not find a truer mantra to describe voting in America in the 21st century.

“Those who vote decide nothing. Those who count the vote decide everything.”
Joseph Stalin

They should bring in Rahm Emmanuel and Chicago Dems in as consultants. Then again there’s the Rethug Kobach in KS. So many elections to fix and only one Duopoly Party. What’s an oligarchy to do? [Or they could dig up Daddy Daley who held back “his” votes (many fraudulent) until the last minute to put JFK over the top. It was a good move for the nation and a bad one for JFK.]

#13

U’supose there is a reason no one on the other side of the aisle would chip in a dime to guard our votes?

#14

Will DefCon try hacking cellphone voting by Blockchain? If not, they are likely to be testing antiquated and hackable methods of voting.

For what purpose?

#15

Gracias. I knew it was one or the other

#16

Of course, if you built the machine, and your friends ask you nicely to futz with it, you don’t need to hack it, do you?

#17

I couldn’t wait to get home from work so I could praise this post. Excellent!

(and to think that people kill and die to support what they think is Democracy)

Could we afford the constant updates on paper and pencil technology? Where would we store all that hardware? Could we afford to wait 8 hours to learn the legitimate results of honest elections instead of instant results of fraudulent elections?
DefCon has a great idea. Let the kids run the election. They can count and transmit the results by telephone or email to a central bank of kids to aggregate the votes. They can monitor the polls. It is all pretty straight forward stuff and they could be given school credit for their efforts and T shirts and free food and the civic honor of keeping our precious elections honest. Then all we need is strictly public financing of elections.

Cute

We have those mail in paper ballots here in Oregon. We have to fill in "bubble"s though. No “X” 's …
