Chairman of the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee John Barrasso (R-Wyo.) on Monday unveiled draft legislation to overhaul the Endangered Species Act (ESA) in a move that conservationists warn could jeopardize the progress that's been made through the landmark law and limit future initiatives to save various species from extinction.
This is part of the war on Nature that Trump and his industrial allies are accelerating, but aren’t wholly responsible for.
The way our species lives is as if we’re the only species that matters (other than our pets and our food animals), and we can do whatever we want to the biosphere and all other species because we’re the most powerful and we’re soooo special.
Trump and his industrial allies are earth-killers, but the way most of us live is bought into the petroindustrial, babymaking, consumerist, animal-eating socioeconomic culture that makes us a mass extinction event.
It’s accurate to condemn Trump and the GOP, and to save the ESA and EPA, but it’s also accurate to look at your leaf blowers, boats, jet skis, jet airplane travel, big cars and houses, steaks, and other choices and see that we’re all killing Nature and innocent animals.
“Despots see public officials and government bureaucrats and democratic institutions, no matter how anemic, as a threat. This explains the assaults on the State Department, the Justice Department, the Environmental Protection Agency, the Department of Education and the courts. Despots use their appointees to undermine and destroy these institutions, mocking their existence and questioning the loyalty of the professionals who staff them. The reviled and neutered public employee surrenders or walks away in despair. Last year, the entire senior level of management officials resigned at the State Department. Resignations continue to bleed the diplomatic core, as they do at other agencies and departments, and last week included James D. Melville Jr., the U.S. ambassador to Estonia, and Susan Thornton, the nominee to be assistant secretary for East Asian affairs”. Chris Hedges
Trump and the GOP Congress’ definition of “overhaul” is to destroy beyond recognition.
Will any progressive legislation from the 20th century be extant in 2020 ?
I am starting to wonder if humanity is the planets way of committing suicide.
It is not as if the planet could not kill us off if it wanted to, and it seems unlikely that it would be unaware of our impact.
Given all the contingencies and redundant systems that every natural process has, it may be unable to kill itself any other way.
After a few billion years of floating in an endless void, it may have decided that enough is enough.
I just watched an amazing video on all the previous mass extinctions, caused by volcanoes, ice ages, meteors, etc.
But never before has there been one caused by the only organism that evolved to have a choice as to how it lives, eats, and otherwise deals with other species and life itself.
If we commit ecocide, it’ll be the worst crime the universe has ever seen.
But some life could survive us, and in a few million years, who knows what could evolve again.
Hopefully it won’t be a species that loves to kill as much as we love to.
I have been ringing the alarm bell on this for some time now. Trumps Federal Conservation Committee is made up of Ranchers, Hunters, Trophy Hunters and discredited Veterinarians.
There is not one “Scientist” on the Federal Panel to conserve species. These people have NO EXPERIENCE in saving endangered species, and their only experience is in killing them to eradicate them. Zinke as head of the Dept of Interior is a disaster. We now have open killing and trophy hunts of endangered species beacause of this monster.
Thankyou David. Incredible. Wonder how it would have turned out if that massive meteor hadn’t struck!!!
