The cruelty of the American mind and in particular the FoxNation mind is that people get what they deserve. Calvinism to the nth degree. Even if that were the case, and I will argue it not to be, what about their loved ones who watch them suffer? What about the loss to society–many were high contributors? Rhode Island’s work is exemplary in treating addicted inmates and I will point out that the effort is led by women, which may explain why compassion is such a strong component. (Note, I am male.) While there are numerous needs to fix the “judicial” system in this country, this is low hanging fruit, which I suspect any true accounting would find to be of net benefit both in social and fiscal metrics.
