As Uprising Spreads Across Globe, Naomi Klein and Noam Chomsky Among Signers of Open Letter Backing Extinction Rebellion

Jake Johnson, staff writer

After starting in the United Kingdom just months ago with a mere 10 members dedicated to pressuring their elected officials to urgently confront the climate crisis, the Extinction Rebellion has quickly ballooned into a global movement spanning an estimated 35 countries—a testament to the growing disaffection

“The flow of energy through a system tends to organize that system.”
–R. Buckminster Fuller

The global left is organizing, at long last. The forces of reaction, unfortunately, have been organized for a very long time, probably because they are so few in number and so unified in the pursuit of their goal: MORE!

Great quote.

After almost 30 years of trying to get adequate action it is discouraging that that this type of letter is being written in 2018. It seems to highlight the futility.

#6

Why don’t they protest at the Fat Head’s White House. He leads the most profligate of all international polluters!

#7

The letter is a long overdue indictment of our lifestyle here in the western developed nations, as well as elsewhere, wherever unlimited growth capitalism reigns. We change, or we risk killing the planet which sustains our very lives. Trump can deny and people will laugh. He’s a temporary buffoon. It’s us, the people who consume, who must lead the way and change. Governments need help.

#8

Good idea. I do believe that it is suggested, actually.

It is wonderful and encouraging to see this letter with so many familiar names.

At least some of our rulers know quite well that they are in for a fight–for both violent and nonviolent mass protest. They have been hedging against it for quite some time–practicing surveillance and targeted assassinations by demographic, testing various sorts of non-lethal but damaging crowd control, planting disinformation, paying agents provocateurs and all sorts of things.

It seems to me likely that quite a bit of what we do ought to involve direct action–just going ahead and making a more adequate world piece by piece as much as possible as though the law did not stand in our way. It’s not going to get us out of political activity, but it could potentially give that activity a whole lot of support.

There is much about this hope to stop global warming which is futile - -

but spiritual wins are also important – like stopping liars, betrayers and Elites –

and the damage they continue to do to Nature and human beings.

Yellow vests are available at prices from $2.99 and up –
https://rebellion.earth/vandana-shiva-naomi-klein-noam-chomsky-and-more-sign-global-call-to-arms-on-climate-emergenc/

Here’s the letter which Shiva, Klein and Chomsky have signed on to –

The letter states that:

•“International political organizations and national governments must foreground the climate-emergency issue immediately, urgently drawing up comprehensive policies to address it
•Conventionally privileged nations must voluntarily fund comprehensive environment-protection policies in impoverished nations, to compensate the latter for foregoing unsustainable economic growth, and paying recompense for the planet-plundering imperialism of materially privileged nations
•With extreme weather already hitting food production, we demand that governments act now to avoid any risk of hunger, with emergency investment in agro-ecological extreme-weather-resistant food production
•We also call for an urgent summit on saving the Arctic icecap, to slow weather disruption of our harvests
•We further call on concerned global citizens to rise up and organise against current complacency in their particular contexts, including indigenous people’s rights advocacy, decolonization and reparatory justice – so joining the global movement that’s now rebelling against extinction (e.g. “Extinction Rebellion” in the UK).
•We must collectively do whatever’s necessary non-violently, to persuade politicians and business leaders to relinquish their complacency and denial.
•Every one of us, especially in the materially privileged world, must commit to accepting the need to live more lightly, consume far less, and to not only uphold human rights but also our stewardship responsibilities to the planet.” [1 – full letter and signatory list below]

Especially like the last three recommendations as I’d rather see this remain in the hands of
“global citizens rising up and organizing” in a global movement.

We all know what to do and as we begin to unite it will become clearer as to ways to do it.

The emergencies that are the most obvious to us are –

STOP funding “Christianity” which underpins Elites and which has granted them license
via “Manifest Destiny” and “Man’s Dominion Over Nature” to exploit Nature, Animal-Life,
Natural Resources and even other human beings according to various myths of “inferiority.”
Exploitation of Nature at every level must be stopped and these licenses brought to an end.
Their invention of Capitalism is suicidal. We need to stop cooperating with the capitalism
which steals from all of us every day to profit itself. Governments currently in the hands of
Elites must be returned to the control of the people.

STOP eating-animals which is the root of a long chain of violence which effects all of us in
our societies. Abuse of animals has long been connected by studies to abuse of humans.
Slaughter houses are removed from public view because if we could see what is done in
those places we would be so sickened by it that we would run from it.

STOP the pretense that there is anything “moral” about our government’s attack on birth
control, family planning, and reproductive freedom/CHOICE.
Certainly, GOP is not moral – includingTrump, of course and our male-dominated Congress.
Certainly, Supreme Court isn’t moral as Citizens United makes clear.
Certainly, Male-Supremacist “Christianity” is not moral as we see in their collection of wealth,
their underpinning support for Elite-Patriarchy throughout the world; their Papal Edicts which
have demonized native people everywhere for the sole purpose of stealing their land.

Nor is the FACE of this battle against reproductive freedom and abortion real as actually
Evangelists did not support the premise that “life begins at conception” and "nor did they support
denying therapeutic abortions for females to protect their health and lives and future fertility."
This is the lie of the GOP which needs to hide that it is in the interests of Elites/Corporations and
their need for cheap labor and higher profits that Roe is under attack.

STOP cooperating with Elites, Patriarchy and Capitalism wherever you can.

FTA ~ “We must collectively do whatever’s necessary non-violently, to persuade politicians and business leaders to relinquish their complacency and denial.”

The denial is in thinking non-violence defeats violence. I keep waiting for anyone to seriously suggest people stop driving personal vehicles. Not just for one day, as a statement. For good. That would cause some serious ripples. Breaking away from the future we are creating will be chaotic, at best. Not breaking away, of course, is fatal. What about suggesting everyone stop buying handheld computing devices, as a start? Can we?

Dubet – [

“We must collectively do whatever’s necessary non-violently, to persuade politicians and business leaders to relinquish their complacency and denial.”

It’s impossible for many to earn a living without a car.
But in reality what continues to happen is that Elites/wealthy continue to destroy what is
left of mass transportation – trains and subways and trollies – in order to force more
commuters into cars.

But as I’ve mentioned before our cars can be used in some “actions” against fascist government.
They can be taken off the road all at one time or pulled to the side of roads to indicate unity and
statements on various issues. They can be completely taken off the roads for periods of time –
15 or 20 minute intervals – to also make clear their determination to unite and stay united.

We can also begin to convert our cars to electric/solar –
They can be re-engineered but likely not without the cooperation of our state governments
which would have to supply support and financing. The costs could be split between the
government and citizens – and a loan to citizens for their half which could quickly be wiped
out with savings on “gas.”

Breaking away from the future we are creating will be chaotic, at best. Not breaking away, of course, is fatal.

What about suggesting everyone stop buying handheld computing devices, as a start? Can we?

Dubet – PLEASE suggest any ideas that you have. Any and all of them. We are desperate here
for discussion of what steps we can take against increasing fascist control of our government here.

The Extinction Rebellion calls for: The Government must enact legally binding policy measures to reduce carbon emissions to net zero by 2025 and to reduce consumption levels. Would be good if the signers of the letter stated that demand in the letter - and then ensured that the groups they are with embraced the demand. The time for vague calls for action is gone.
