Backed by Ocasio-Cortez, Youth Climate Activists Arrested in Pelosi's Office Demanding Democrats Embrace 'Green New Deal'

Jessica Corbett, staff writer

Youth climate activists with the Sunrise Movement and Justice Democrats were arrested on Capitol Hill Monday for staging a sit-in at the Washington, D.C. office of Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.)—who is expected to serve as the next speaker of the House—to demand that congressional Democrats back a "Green New Deal."

Reminds me of thoughts and prayers that mean no real action will be allowed! I hope I am proved wrong but to me the Democratic Party and people like Pelosi are so corrupt that it cannot be reformed even though so many good people like OC keep trying.

Before this turns into a rant I hope a few people will be pro joining up of the greens with the greens. If the “Green New Deal” is indeed a farce let’s get going on outing it.

I wouldn’t care who got credit if I thought Democrats would actually do anything. They should expect skepticism and contempt when they dangle progressive bait from the party of bait-and-switch.

This is awesome but I suspect that we have less than 10 years since abrupt climate change is very close and when that kicks in then our habitat will be lost and things will fall apart very quickly. The IPCC is still quite conservative with it’s projections.

I’m not one to expect the Democrats to do much to address climate change, but I admire those who are actively demanding that significant action be taken. Ocasio-Cortez shows great independence and fortitude in challenging Pelosi - I hope she can retain her moral compass.

The “radical” scientists, who so far have been accurate in their assessment of climate change and its relating cascade of disasters, estimate that we have between 3-5 years to halt all industrial pollution, not just fossil fuel extraction.

It is doubtful that Pelosi knows how to operate a squirt gun…

Thomas Friedman appears to have coined the term. He’s at least on record as using it an article long before any Green party affiliate adopted the term. And other organizations, including the United Nations, had already taken up the term before them.

After reading the new deal is it any wonder why the democrat leadership would balk at a program that large at this moment. I think the right approach would be something more like asking the green party to have as much of the “New Deal” as possible be offered into the convention platform and see how it fly’s. Even though time is short politics can;t be rushed even if we all die while it’s being delayed.

Heavens! How condescending can you get, Pelosi? Stand with our youth who are inheriting this crisis!

First, it doesn’t matter what the democrats agenda is. We now have an imperial presidency, a senate that is utterly corrupt, and a SCOTUS that will back any and all fascist decisions coming from either. Even under those circumstances, circumstances where the democratic leadership could easily adopt a far more liberal agenda with no fear that it would ever be enacted because of the above gridlock mechanisms, they won’t even consider it. The last thing that Pelosi, Durbin, Schumer, and their corporate Clintonian ilk want is to give any quarter to the coming progressive tide.
Second, all of this supposition will be for naught, as Pelosi is all but a shoo-in to be speaker once again. Investigations will begin in earnest of course, as the democrats have by one plan now. They will spend the next two years with but one goal, disgrace Trump even further and hope that the Rest of the GOP still give him enough tacit support that they go down in flames with him. The shame of this is that Trumps predictable downfall will all but guarantee that the democrats will win control of the POTUS, senate and House in 2020 with the same center/right leadership they have now. There will be no bold progressive agenda, and any attempt to even try to implement one will be blocked by the all powerful SCOTUS and the nation will in turn contiune to flounder for another generation.
(BTW, Thomas will step down early next year. Another younger, even more fascist justice will be placed on the court, and short of the revolutionary act of disbanding the SCOTUS, the USA will be run by fascists until at least 2040.)

As long as we spend $700 billion a year on the military, killing people all over the world, you can kiss the planet good bye. Also, machines with moving parts require petroleum lubricants; vegetable oils will not do the job.

You are right. This is not a progressive takeover of the Democratic Party. It is the Democratic Party using a few DSA members (not an actual political party, and not real socialism) to create the illusion that a new Democratic Party is rising out of the ashes of the old Democratic Party. The GOP is trying to fool their voters with the same trick, by the way. But in both parties, the groups trying to take over the party is very small. The American political establishment is still very much in control.

The village idiot getting a Peace award, the Hildebeast thinking of running again, Bill Clinton not in prison for multiple assaults, the walrus calling for more wars…how effed up is this Empire ? Anyone who supports either of the corrupt parties is delusional.

While reading this article, I was thinking about Nancy Pelosi and Dianne Feinstein. Pelosi is 78 and Feinstein is 85. These are the most powerful people in the Democratic Party. Neither of them has any reason to care if humanity exists beyond about five more years because neither of them is likely to live that long. What difference would climate change make to people who only need a few more years of clean air? Why should the economy matter to someone who married a real estate mogul and venture capitalist (hint: his name is Paul Pelosi) or someone who married an investment banker who does business with China (the couple has a net worth of over $30 million)? Both Pelosi and Feinstein live in San Francisco, a city where the median home price is now more than $1,000,000.
