Bait and Switch: No One Voted to Destroy Medicare

Nancy Altman

Donald Trump did not campaign on a promise to destroy Medicare. In fact, he promised not to touch Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid. But now that the Republicans are in charge of the White House, the Senate, and the House of Representatives, destroying Medicare appears to be on the top of their agenda.

This is classic bait and switch. Trump and his fellow Republicans promised to repeal Obamacare. Now, with the election in the rear-view mirror, House Speaker Paul Ryan has wasted no time in announcing his plan to end Medicare.

Hey, don't limit analysis of 'bait and switch' according to issue. Keep in mind that the presumtive incoming occupant of the west wing has more in common with the TV series and advertising.
We all need to stay in direct contact with all concerns and legislators and the facts as they develop - because they will need to be exercised as never before in US history.
If the past TV persona and recent slime of the Carrier promise is any indicator of Donald Trump as actor, in whatever role, he is blind to the fact that you can be an auto-erotic 'viagra'-addicted fascist on TV and get away with it, but in 'real life' one does so with very real consequences.

Congress put US taxpayers on the hook for $20 plus trillion dollars in bailout schemes for the too-big-to-fail banks that controlled 25% of US bank assets when they crashed the economy in 2008. Since then Congress has enabled those banks to soon control 50% of US bank assets, meaning that taxpayer funded bailouts will be at least twice that cost the next time those banks crash the economy.

Cutting Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid are the easiest ways for the politicians (who are owned by those banks) to pay for the upcoming bailouts.

#4

With any luck, Ryan, Mitchell and Pence and their cohorts about to learn why the "third rail" metaphor was invented for politics.

#5

They will also learn why this election was rigged to favor Trump and not Clinton. The Powers That Be (deep state, shadow government, whatever...) have big plans for him and it's not for us mere proles to know what they are. Hold onto your seats, it's going to be a wild ride.

#6

Will borrowing another $10 trillion or so to bail out the banksters even be an option this time?

#7

Dodd/Frank makes "bail in" legal whereby depositors' money can now be used for bailing out banks. Although Trump vowed to kill Dodd/Frank he and his band of pirates will cherry pick it and keep the parts favorable to the 1% while ditching CFPB and anything else favorable to the 99%. They will also cherry pick Obamacare to keep the insurance/drug corporate welfare sections. Ryan plans to get additional bailout money from the Social Security Trust Fund.

#8

SS Trust Fund? Sorry, Ray, that's just a bag of IOUs. Governments from Ronnie's on down to Obama's have used the actual money to finance the wars.

#9

Too-big-to-fail banks are part of the military industrial media infotainment complex (MIMIC) and therefore will continue to have access to SS fund IOUs.

Traffic's Dear Mr. Fantasy and Ry Cooder's No Banker Left Behind are the Trump inauguration theme songs.

#10

Hey, Ray, are you an old geezer like me living on SS and Medicare?

#11

Soon to be, Eddie Munster willing.

Remember that Obama set up the Bowles/Simpson commission that wanted to "reform" Social Security and Medicare. Democrats, who are mainly interested in raising money from Wall Street and corporate donors, have mounted little, or no, opposition to Republicans on a number of issues. If we senior citizens want to save any programs it is up to us ourselves through action. Many of us have been involved in protests such as the Occupy Movement and others, and we must do it again, since we can only count on a handful of people in Congress to represent our interests.

And Pink Floyd, Dogs.

#14

No one voted to cut SS, but without fail here it is...political suicide and if it comes to a revolution, I'll be out in the streets.

#15

It will be necessary for the Republican Party to lose control of Congress in the 2018 election. For Donald Trump to be a one term President.

#16

No. During the last 8 years the banksters have passed laws allowing them to raid their depositors assets. Lovely

#19

Suggest that more QE is the cheapest way to bail out the banks. And actually all of us should TPTB so choose. As if.

#20

They are already trying to destroy (besides everything) Social Security and Medicare. http://talkingpointsmemo.com/dc/republican-bill-social-security-cuts
They aren't wasting any time going after the programs that have actually worked for so long. They have no soul, no empathy, only greed. They are dead.
This is it, we knew it was coming. Get on the phone, emails, petitions and let's not forget getting in the streets to stop this insanity.

#21

No, they now have what's called "Bail In" which allows them to keep the depositors money to bail out the bank. We will still pay for their gambling addiction but now we have no choice.
The next bust will be next year or so the economists seem to think.
