Blaze From Fiery Derailment Continues Amid Renewed Call for Action on Oil Trains

Andrea Germanos, staff writer

The fiery derailment this weekend of a train transporting crude through Ontario should spark immediate action to address the risks to people and ecosystems the booming oil-by-rail industry poses, an environmental group says.

The incident, which occurred late Saturday night roughly 50 miles south of the city of Timmins, is the latest in a series of such accidents.

When there is a train accident, the pipeliners call for more pipelines. When pipelines leak or get slowed down, the trainers say we can haul it. The best thing to keep train and pipeline disasters from happening is to shut down the extraction of fossil fuels. We have more than we can safely burn already in storage. Time to get on our uppers and develop sustainable energy. Not clean coal [a dirty joke] and not nukes [not even a little funny] but solar, tidal, wind, and efficiency.
