Bowe Bergdahl: Traitor to American Exceptionalism and White Supremacy

Matthew Hoh

"There is no forgiveness in this loudly and righteously proclaimed Christian nation, only the scapegoating of a young man and his family for the failures of immoral and unwinnable wars."

Bowe Bergdahl, a young man who never should have been inducted into the Army to begin with, his suffering is testament to the viciousness, callousness and hate that dominates American actions both at home and abroad.

Nailed it!!!

Compassion and mercy are antithetical to the very creed of the military. They’re considered liabilities, not virtues, and the military works hard to weed them out of recruits during training. Military courts reflect this. No way will Bergdahl be shown mercy. It would send the wrong message to the troops. The military courts, as usual, will not pass up an opportunity to make an example of a soldier who steps out of line.

This article highlights all that is sick about this country.

Mothers of America–this is one of our sons!!! Please oh please DO NOT let the evil forces now rampant in our world, force us to betray our children!!!

This young man is a HERO!!! End of story.

Thank you for asserting the call to arms that embrace - DO NOT BETRAY THE CHILDREN. It is an apt statement for a placard held in public squares.

On Children
 Kahlil Gibran

Your children are not your children.
They are the sons and daughters of Life's longing for itself.
They come through you but not from you,
And though they are with you yet they belong not to you.

You may give them your love but not your thoughts,
For they have their own thoughts.
You may house their bodies but not their souls,
For their souls dwell in the house of tomorrow,
which you cannot visit, not even in your dreams.
You may strive to be like them,
but seek not to make them like you.
For life goes not backward nor tarries with yesterday.

You are the bows from which your children
as living arrows are sent forth.
The archer sees the mark upon the path of the infinite,
and He bends you with His might
that His arrows may go swift and far.
Let your bending in the archer's hand be for gladness;
For even as He loves the arrow that flies,
so He loves also the bow that is stable.

“The Prophet” has always been one of my favorite books! Thank you old goat. YES!!!

DO NOT BETRAY THE CHILDREN!!! If only all would wake up and see that this is what we are allowing to happen!

Bowe Bergdahl a traitor?

No, in my opinion, the people that are traitors to America and culpable of treason are the ones that sent Bowe to Afghanistan. Too bad there is not some way to court martial the entire Pentagon!

#8

I’m reminded of JFK’s aphorism: “Victory has a thousand fathers, while failure is an orphan.”

There is (at least one) reason that Republican politicians consistently do so well at the polls; they mirror the mentality of a huge swath of the American people.

I just want to say that the Serial Season 2 podcast about the Bergdahl affair was excellent. What I took from the program was that he was a gung-ho soldier with some delusions of grandeur. He made a mistake because of these delusions, and got him self in a lot of trouble. He has suffered the consequences and he should be eligible for the veterans benefits of any soldier. The military took him in as mentally ill, and they ought to take care of him now.

A very good essay. Thanks, Common Dreams!

#14

Thank you, oldgoat, for sharing that beautiful poem and its timeless wisdom!

#15

Also, the greedhead “contractors” who went, and are still going, to Afghanistan to make quick and easy $$$$!

#16

Don’t you think 5 years being tortured is enough?

#17

Thank you Matthew, we needed this today. Thank you always for your support and insight.

#18

“Oozing” at the seams with compassion. Yeah right.
It is very unlikely that Bergdahl ordered his rescue attempts or caused any brain injuries but according to Mr. Compassion he should spend the rest of his life in prison.
America is a mean country!!

#19

Right again. If 100 million ignorant Americans believe something it should be acted on. How is that workin’ out for ya?

#20

You can say that again! And the man in the White House is about as mean, vindictive, and just plain nasty as they come.

#22

Thank you for your beautifully expressed article. Nothing to add. Veterans say it well.

If lives are risked, they aren’t for democracy, freedom or any other words which reflect ideals. Lives are risked for capitalism. For profits. For Corporations. The military is just a tool provided so imperialism can reign over the planet.
