Terrific article, Ms. Gordon. Thank you for connecting so many dots!
The usurpation of America by devotees of The Shock Doctrine has led to entrepreneurial efforts–like the War on Drugs–that set up a crisis that leads to profitable containment measures.
The MIC has, like a giant one-celled animal, split into other clones. One is them is the Security-industrial complex with its legions of border guards. Facts show that NAFTA wrecked the agrarian economy of Mexico, Honduras, and Guatemala, yet treaties of this nation continue to be created to spread more horrors. So many were forced from their homes and homelands.
Out of the misery, poverty, and privation created by NAFTA and U.S. intervention in Latin America, under-the-radar economies (like gangs trafficking in drugs) became one of the only reliable bases for communities-of-color’s survival.
Enter the Prison-industrial complex: clone 3 (of the MIC’s labyrinth).
Since lobbyists push weapon sales, and thus require wars; and prison builders push prison building, and thus require inmates; and since the fictitious War on Terror pushes security operations… all of these toxic measures ensure profits to the same maniacs (Hint: Disaster Capitalists) that invented them.
The only thing that can roll back all the repressions now in place is either an unexpected attack on The Homeland–signaling martial law (which is already covertly in place); a run of climate chaotic events that impedes business as usual; a global “run on” the dollar brought forth by BRICS… taking The Beast to its knees. Or another form of Divine Intervention.
What’s happening IN Mexico is happening in, as Ms. Gordon related, the Middle East urban warfare zones and U.S. ghettoes.
It’s only a failure to the societies brutally impacted by those who like to wear uniforms in order to express their inherent sadism… the legion of thugs and their handlers don’t see failure (in the drug war or war on terror) at all. Just look at the Piketty Study’s results: profits are WAY up for the 1%. Macho militarism tends to serve the oligarchs. Until nations learn to forfeit their faith in arms, their people will remain collateral damage.
Sagacious article. Not much to add except to say again: There has never been a war on drugs; only a war on whom controls the drugs.
