Chelsea Manning Is a Free Woman: Her Heroism Has Expanded Beyond Her Initial Whistleblowing

Glenn Greenwald

Ever since Chelsea Manning was revealed as the whistleblower responsible for one of the most important journalistic archives in history, her heroism has been manifest. She was the classic leaker of conscience, someone who went at the age of 20 to fight in the Iraq War believing it was noble, only to discover the dark reality not only of that war but of the U.S. government’s actions in the world generally: war crimes, indiscriminate slaughter, complicity with high-level official corruption, and systematic deceit of the public.

She deserves our thanks, and a full and complete exoneration, while most senior members of the Bush and Obama administrations deserve to take her place in the Brig.

One of the interesting & frustrating things about the abuse of Chelsea Manning has been the total failure of LBTGQ community to support her. In fact, the LBTGQ community strongly supported Obama, who allowed Manning to be tortured for 2 years, and Hillary, who called Manning (& Snowden) at traitor.

Ultimately every identity group which allies itself with the Democrats is in effect throwing the Mannings, Snowdens & Assanges under the bus. This is of course a betrayal of the principles democracy & justice. And ultimately, the only minority group the Democrats truly serve is the 1%.

And the silence in these comments of the supporters of Hillary and haters of Trump is deafing.

Identity Politics matters so much they sacrificed everything for Clinton, but they don't give a flying fig about a true hero with a minority gender identity.

Go, Chelsea, don't let the bastards get you down. Live your life. You owe them nothing.

In a nutshell: Chelsea Manning exposed the fact that the Empire has no clothes and is guilty of war crimes. She should be given the medal of honor for her courage.
