Reducing everything to a war metaphor somehow makes things worse.
Thank you, Simon. Another great column! Our priorities must fall in line with the reality of our precarious situation on our only home, earth! We kill, because we can; let’s try to save our earth and in so doing, our own humanity, because we can!
Take it from people in rural Mississippi and Idaho: you don’t have to wear no stinkin masks and you don’t have to fight that war. Instead, you can die.
The question is, how will you know when your government is lifting a finger to fight the climate emergency? Will the sound of snoring cease? Will they start funding nuclear power? Will they start funding carbon sequestration schemes that take enormous amounts of power to run? Will they push corn ethanol even harder? Will they visit renewable energy labs and make speeches without mentioning that they’re locking dozens of surprisingly good renewable energy ideas outside? All it takes to lock ideas outside is a bit of fossil fuel ignorance because nobody wants to know - see no good, hear no good, speak no good. There’s a revolving door between the Department of Energy and the fossil fuel industry, you know.
Not only are U.S. taxpayer dollars being funneled directly into the pockets of war profiteers, but perhaps even more significantly the profits of the individuals and corporations who fund the reelections of the Military Complex protectors in government responsible for funneling those dollars are not taxed providing virtually unending funding sources. A closed loop scheme that make a Madoff ponzi scheme look amateurish! This is nothing short of mobster tactics.
In 2016 Bernie Sanders was labeled as the most dangerous person IN THE WORLD by Wall Street, why, because he was a direct threat to this scam being perpetrated on asleep Americans, as he was about to make the rich pay taxes and name William K. Black as his AG if elected. William K. Black who was not afraid to send Wall Street gangsters and politicians to prison.
USA is the land of whatever you can get away with. Fanny Trollope observed in 1830 that there are many dishonest people in the world, but the Yankee is singularly proud of his ill-gotten conquests. Her son Anthony wrote a remarkable travel-log of Civil War USA called “North America” – so forgetten it’s difficult to find. AT’s account really sealed the deal for me, long ago: USA stands for Unrestrained Scams, Always. The very meaning of “freedom” got uniquely twisted on this continent long ago. In USA “freedom” means absolute license to rip off your neighbor, so everybody better watch out. What a pleasant people.
Would you like to come over for tea
with the missus and me?
It’s a real nice way to spend the day, in Dayton, Ohio
on a lazy Sunday afternoon in 1903.
