Company Apologizes for Oil Train Disaster It Acknowledges Is Inevitable

Jon Queally, staff writer

As crews continue efforts to contain an oil sheen on the Columbia River and assess the environmental impact of a derailment and resulting fire on Friday, a spokesperson for the oil-by-train company behind the disaster issued an apology to the community of Mosier, Oregon on Saturday.

"I want to apologize to the community," Union Pacific spokesperson Raquel Espinoza said at a news conference. "This is the type of accident we work to prevent every day."

”shareholder value doesn’t outweigh the lives and happiness of our community.”

Not just in the Gorge but everywhere. Thanks to the fire chief for this most succint statement.

"shareholder value doesn’t outweigh the lives and happiness of our community.""

they all come around eventually. it's a shame it always takes something this direct to do it. but they all come around.

Sadly, the is the US. Shareholder value outweighs the survival of the species.

And just wait until our astute government sees fit to start trucking more and more radioactive garbage around the country--from those "clean" nuclear power plants the corporate liars keep touting as an answer to this sort of disaster. Yes, things could get worse than oil train derailments. Think: Mobile Chernobyl.

No, Sanders is not "the only hope." Each and every person is the only hope. There are lots of paths to the future.

So, who's responsible for these 'new, inefficient' regulations? We've been shipping oil for generations - this seems like a new thing..

Very large increase in rail shipments in recent years, due to the fracking boom and other forms of extreme energy extraction. So, many more derailments bringing attention to the utter lack of security.

Two key words used by "Free market" purists and those that advocate Corporations running economies are the words "efficiency" and "productivity".

In order for a more productive and efficient Corporation , thus returning higher pofits to the bottom line , these trains are staffed by less people and get ever longer. Added to that rail cars are kept in service longer so as to maximize the return on investment. Freed of ever more Government regulations railroads are inspected less. Operators sit at computer screens being instructed by software just how to get those rail lines used to their absolute capacity so that ever more miles of track utilized at any time.

I know I speak to the Choir here but not factored into those equations are the state of the infrastructure , risk to citizens from a mishap and the destruction of the environment. All of these costs are externalized and footed by another so as to ensure the Corporation remains as profitable as is possible.

The results are all around us whereby that over a span of something over a hundred years we have oceans filled with plastics, birds guts in remote Pacific isles bursting with the same, acid and mercury falling in the rain that falls from the sky, rivers and water reservoirs contaminated with heavy metals and residues of prescription drugs, tailing ponds filled with chemicals and heavy metals visble from space, mountains of garbage and industrial waste kept in every corner of this earth , fish and wildlife so contaminated with mercury and other toxins they unsafe to eat, glysophates appearing in 98 percent of peoples urine samples while our respective Governments still preach the Gospel of job creation, investment, productivity, and the need to allow the "free market" and the Corporations yet freer reign to do their business.

Well they are doing their business and that business is a number 2 on every corner of this Earth in which we live.

Accidents like this tend to plummet people into the false debate of pipeline vs rail.
But this discussion refuses to address the underlying problem for any transport of oil.
Any transport can cause massive problems that are poorly regulated and gift taxpayer dollars to mega-corporations. Individuals lose the value of their hard earned assets through spills.

The real discussion is where is the transition policy with benchmarks that demonstrates we are well on our way to reducing oil use substantially, and consequently, new transportation infrastructure is only necessary to replace defective infrastructure.
Where is the regulation where cities, towns, homeowners and water drinkers are instantly and fully compensated, without legal intervention for all damages, including inability to sell your assets and loss of work, by said corporation?
But such policy is nowhere in sight, and the dominant benefactors of the dirty energy system are all too happy to see the discussion mired in burning oil and corporate rule rather than reducing oil use.

"I think the industry is perfectly willing to put a gun to our heads and risk our lives for the sake of making money.": No kidding. But should we be surprised when this very nation was built on a conscienceless foundation of enslavement and genocide? The apotheosis of Bernie Sanders.

These mindless followers truly terrify me.

Think: Fukushima. Ongoing out of control for over 5 years and counting and way worse than Chernobyl. Everything is dwarfed by this. All the propaganda and censorship cannot stop the inevitable. International teams of experts must intervene and be in place. Plans for evacuation of millions of Japanese climate refugees must be made. The Toyko Olympics must be cancelled.

A now the people of Mosier cannot drink or bathe in their water. And they cannot flush their toilets as all the water in town was used for the oil fire. A pristine creek that flows into the Columbia has been soaked with oil...some of the dirtiest, explosive crude oil known. The Interstate Commerce Commission does not have the money or the manpower to make sure private railroad corps abide by safety regulations whether it be rail lines or rail cars that transport this volatile cargo. Replacing old, unsafe oil cars with updated safer cars is at the bottom of their to-do list...that would cut into their profits. Congress has also dropped the ball on legislation mandating expeditious replacements. Cornelius Vanderbilt and Rockefeller are chuckling in Haedes. The storage tanks at Hanford reservation still leak into the soil and streams emptying into the Columbia. And so it goes.

Perhaps there’s a musician out there who gets inspired and can add music to my lyrics and we can “sing” some sense into the minds of people.

The Oil Train

Lyrics by Richard Marcus

1.
Is there a part of your hometown
You'd like to see replaced,
Perhaps your Main Street businesses district
Completely laid to waste?
Or the neighborhood you live in
Hit like a drone attack.
Well, there’s an answer to your prayers
And it’s coming down the track!
It’s...

CHORUS
The oil train! The oil train!
A million gallon time bomb
Roarin’ past our homes and schools
The oil train! The oil train!
Safety fails when you grease the rails
Cause profit always rules.
The oil train! The oil train!
When that fireball from hell explodes
Don’t stop and question “Why?”
Just remember, you were warned
And kiss your ass goodbye!

2.
But don’t worry ‘bout the deadly spills
Spewing poison and corrosion
Most of the toxins goes...somewhere?
In the staggering explosion.
Just put that petrol to your metro,
Give your town a nice clean slate.
Yes, urban renewal through fossil fuel
Why, I bet that you can’t wait.
For...

CHORUS
The oil train! The oil train!
A million gallon time bomb
Roarin’ past our homes and schools
The oil train! The oil train!
Safety fails when you grease the rails
Cause profit always rules.
The oil train! The oil train!
When that fireball from hell explodes
Don’t stop and question “Why?”
Just remember, you were warned
And kiss your ass goodbye!

BRIDGE
Good morning America,
How are ya?
I’m a train of pain that’s loaded with napalm
Deliverin’ death right up to your door step
And I’m passing through your town
Like a rolling bomb.

3.
The rail excs point at the Feds
Swear budget cuts are why trains fail,
The Feds scream faulty tanker cars
Are why the trains derail.
The tank car builders blame big oil
For long trains that can’t halt,
So it’s good to know
When those time bombs blow
It’s really no one’s fault.
Except...

CHORUS
The oil train! The oil train!
A million gallon time bomb
Roarin’ past our homes and schools
The oil train! The oil train!
Safety fails when you grease the rails
Cause profit always rules.
The oil train! The oil train!
When that fireball from hell explodes
Don’t stop and question “Why?”
Just remember, you were warned
And kiss your ass goodbye!
