FINLAND, Minn. - Today, the U.S. House of Representatives passed H.R. 1599, commonly known as the “DARK Act” (Deny Americans the Right to Know), a bill falsely represented by its sponsors as providing “certainty” and “clarity” for controversial genetically engineered foods, In fact, the legislation’s intent is to permanently preserve the right of food manufacturers to deceive consumers.
Consumers, Health Advocates and Farmers Mobilize Massive Movement in Opposition to Congressional “DARK Act” Aimed at Preempting Labeling and Safety Testing of Genetically Engineered Foods
Another aspect that should be noted is that American food exports will take a big hit from countries that already prohibit the importation of GMO and create a problem in those that require the labelling that companies like Monsanto are trying to avoid. The export of these foods would require create two sets of labelling - one for the home market without disclosure of GMO content and one elsewhere that does label it. An instant negative advertising nightmare as ever might be imagined.
Moreover many people even in those countries where it is permitted would refuse to buy or use products labelled as GMO and that would also become news as has already happened with food aid shipments.
Once again the corporations choose profit over people and whether GMOs are safe or not, it is obvious that people want to have choice in what they must eat. Capitalism is supposed to be all about the law of the marketplace and competition. If a product isn't popular then it doesn't sell... right?
This is corporate fascism of the marketplace... a dictatorial autocratic subversion of the power of the marketplace. All that speechifying about the high ideals and natural checks and balances inherent in free market capitalism that dominates our rapidly collapsing planetary systems... suddenly becomes moot.
There is nothing free about having no choice.
