At the “head” of such an agency we get what we get. Below we have many dedicated servants who toil and try to get things right. The third of November is a chance to embrace those who do the right thing!

I copied this from Heather Cox Richardson’s excellent daily blog:

"As the coronavirus continues to ravage the country, the way the government will collect data about Covid-19 cases changed today. On March 29, Vice President Mike Pence asked hospital administrators to report data about coronavirus through three different systems: the network provided by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (the CDC), HHS Protect, and TeleTracking. Last Friday, the Department of Health and Human Services announced that, beginning today, hospitals should report daily information about coronavirus cases not through the CDC system, which has been in place for 15 years, but rather through the other two.

This move has met with widespread condemnation as observers worry that Trump is trying to take control of information about the coronavirus in order to conceal it. In Florida, Governor Ron DeSantis has hidden information this way, and Trump has made it clear he believes that if only he downplays the numbers, he can convince people to go back to work and resurrect the economy.

But there is another angle to this change that seems to me likely to be at least as attractive to the president as control over data information. That primary issue is money.

HHS Protect is developed by Palantir Technologies, a data-mining firm that works with the Pentagon and law enforcement agencies, including Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). Peter Thiel, a billionaire Trump supporter, co-founded the company, which last week confidentially filed paperwork with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission to go public. An initial public offering (IPO) would have made bucketloads of money in any case, but a federal contract to compile coronavirus information is a sweet addition to its portfolio.

The TeleTracking system also raises suspicions of a financial deal. On June 3, Chair of the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor & Pensions Senator Patty Murray (D-WA) wrote to the director of the CDC, Dr. Robert Redfield and the Assistant Secretary for Preparedness and Response at the Department of Health and Human Services, Dr. Robert P. Kadlec, to ask why HHS had awarded a $10 million no-bid contract to create this data system that duplicated the one the CDC already had. Why indeed?

There is, in the letter shifting data collection, a peculiarly nasty stick. Underlined on the first page of the instructions is that “We will no longer be sending out one-time requests for data to aid in the distribution of Remdesivir or any other treatments or supplies. This daily reporting is the only mechanism used for the distribution calculations, and the daily [sic] is needed daily to ensure accurate calculations.”

Remdesivir is one of the two drugs proven effective at combatting Covid-19. Two weeks ago, the Trump administration bought up almost all of the world’s supply of the drug for the next three months.

The rest of the world was outraged at this purchase, but at the time HHS Secretary Alex Azar defended the move by saying “To the extent possible, we want to ensure that any American patient who needs remdesivir can get it. The Trump administration is doing everything in our power to learn more about life-saving therapeutics for Covid-19 and secure access to these options for the American people.”

Now, it appears, in order to get access to it, hospitals will need to use the private data systems the administration supports."

One can only guess, but perhaps Trump got in on that IPO for Palantir Inc.

When Trump spoke of “carnage” during his inauguration speech, he was simply foreshadowing what he intended to inflict.

In his squirmy mind, everything needs to be destroyed and rebuilt to serve only his purposes.

The destruction will continue and escalate, perhaps literally to a nuclear level.

He is quite mentally ill, drug-fogged or both, and the American system of checks and balances has been shattered to the point that nothing will be done to remove him.

America’s experiment has a gaping error.

It’s called the Bird-Box Challenge: driving blindfolded. A great test of faith, for anyone aiming to extinguish faith once and for all. We’ve been passengers in that ill-fated car all year.

And the US descent into 3rd world status continues. Is there any saving it? Not that I can see although I hope that I’m wrong.

Then again, perhaps this windfall will prompt Thiel to renew his financial support of the Trump campaign. Prior to this, Thiel, a major donor to Trump’s 2016 campaign, had publicly stated he would not be donating to Trump’s reelection committee. Quid pro quo?

Unfortunately, “our” elected officials know exactly WHAT they’re doing. They’re the pragmatic grown-ups; cui bono? I’m guessing it’ll be instructive, just how (and upon whom) desperate attempts at innoculation & treatments are tried?

Testing will ONLY be performed, results made available, to private entities, to preclude access to services, if positive (or deny insurance coverage, if negative?) The only thing they’ll learn from this nightmare, is how to hide our corpses.

For individual 1 it’s all about reelection at all costs at this point, lie, cheat, steal, to avoid the coming investigations, prosecutions, and jailing. In a general sense, one of the first steps of fascism is to take down information. These attacks on Dr. Fauci and the CDC are intentional and establish a pattern, and leave no doubt who’s behind ordering them. And the fact that republicans silently stand in support of these attacks on our democracy screams volumes.

"Noam Chomsky: Republican Party is the most dangerous organisation in human history

‘Has there ever been an organisation in human history that is dedicated, with such commitment, to the destruction of organised human life on Earth?’ says distinguished academic Chomsky"

p.s. if individual 1 loses in November, watch him exile to Russia, all roads lead to Putin.

You must not be talking embracing Biden? When has he ever done the right thing. I’m not voting the lesser of 2 evils. I’ll vote Howie some one I can trust to do the right thing. If we roll over and accept Biden with without pressure “No Fundamental Changes”

As a comment ran in 1992, with some 300 million people in the U.S., is this the best candidate we can come up with?(My then-boss was speaking of Clinton). The same question could be asked again in terms of Joe Biden, Donald Trump, and any of the people with any experience in government. The two-party duopoly has run its course, and is running the Republic off the rails. We need a vastly improved electoral system and process, which will be painfully difficult to implement, because Congress is not really hot to change things. There are far too many vested interests in the current system, and those interests are not at all interested in making things more small-d democratic and less big F fascistic.

Dear Mollybear, I was for Bernie when he was just in the House. Joe is not my dream candidate by any measure, but Trump must be vanquished.

If the public cannot trust the words, policy decisions, data reported or the mass media, the claims of a “democracy” and “free country with liberty and justice for-all” is made and obvious lie - total and obvious BS!. still it appears there are millions who either don’t know the facts, don’t care, or agree with the tyranny such a totally untrustworthy regime represents and even touts
.
Are there no laws that proscribe lying bald-faced to the people? Is there no law that makes it a crime to ignore ones oath of public office? Are there no crimes obviously committed by a proven liar and deceiver who cooks-the-books of Covid data, jobs, housing, trillions in expenditures from the publ.c coffers that are clearly guided to crony’s and supporter entities? Are there no law-enforcement that will even challenge such open treason - or are they all in thrall to the tyranny and extremist regime?

When the rule of law is ignored, twisted beyond all recognition, treated with open contempt, and a public official repeatedly screws the public and lies about it, we are is sorry and dire straits indeed!

The only thing politicians and police, and elected reps consider are millions in the streets demanding accountability and serious change!

The DNC has ALREADY weeded-out any candidates, willing to do the right thing? Their complicit media ignored, reviled, obfuscated, lied about… but generally IGNORED, him? Here’s how they tried to cover-up their cynical coverup of the 5,900 uncounted corpses, here in THEIR city? This, BEFORE the disclosures about retirement homes, SNFs, prisons, mass transit and folks dying in their apartments, ambulances, ER waiting rooms, Amazon gigs, Uber, MTA or just curbside?

Actually, framing the matter as “descent into 3rd world” status deserves some drilling. 3rd world countries are those that historically have been decimated by 1) colonial occupation and exploitation; 2) extractive industries that are by their nature corrupt and corrupting.

In the US we seem to be undergoing the transition to the focal point of extraction nearly exclusively on 1). information resources; 2) the Keynsian worship of DEBT 3) the individualization of wealth extraction by class identifiers (eg: student debt, home ownership, etc); 4) the poisoning of the planetary water (fracking: the lord high muckty muck of debt) systems at the same time as climate chaos destroys all predictability aside from exponential intensification of consequences and feedback loops; 5) Number 4 is an entire sphere of financial and other forms of speculation on the basis of the worship of debt.

Nihilism / death wish psychosis among the effete… previously referred to as the “elite” because of their power and wealth. Nothing like having a prime example of the Taoist recognition of the failure of success.
