Darkly Ironic Sign Campaign Seeks to Underscore False Promises of Nuclear Future

Japan's 2011 nuclear meltdown and catastrophe transformed Futaba—home of the Fukushima No. 1 power plant—into a ghost town, with every single resident forced to evacuate. But the municipality's empty streets still contain prominent billboards proclaiming the promise of nuclear power.

The government said Friday it plans to lift its evacuation orders issued for areas near the crippled Fukushima No. 1 nuclear power plant by March 2017, excluding those with high levels of radiation…
The government aims to lift evacuation orders for areas with relatively low levels of radiation, or annual exposure of up to 50 millisieverts.
The guidelines call on TEPCO to continue paying ¥100,000 per month to each evacuee to compensate for mental damage until March 2017 even if the evacuation orders are lifted earlier.
