Debate Over Labeling Omar Obscures Vital Debate on Israel/Palestine

Katie Halper

Though it was not their intention, Ilhan Omar’s critics did her a favor: They proved the very point she made at the Progressive Issues Town Hall at Busboys and Poets bookstore in Washington, DC, last week.

Referring to herself and fellow Democratic Rep. Rashid Tlaib, who was also on the panel, Omar said:

Ilhan Omar has triumphed. The issue if Israel’s undue influence on US policy is now being debated in larger and larger fora.

And like the bought and paid for sock puppets they are, d-party leadership would rather watch young people not show up to vote again rather than support the new progressive generation getting all the headlines.

Ms. Halper wrote an excellent summary of this sordid affair.

But unfortunately, we live in an age of the 280-character “tweet”. The longer the argument, and the more salient points in the argument, the weaker your argument becomes, and, as Ms. Omer has learned, the more opportunities for totally fabricated bullshit accusations from selected and spliced phrases in the argument.

Always remember, our enemies are not interested in intellectual dialogue, only in ramming their fascism down our throats.

Thank you Ms
Halper for pointing out the context in which Rep
Omar made her statement and that the brouhaha is to avoid dealing with Israrli crimes against Palestinians.

“Arabs and Palestinians don’t believe in the Torah. So that’s the reason there is not peace…and that is why we, in America, must stand strong with Israel through thick and thin.”

And Schumer is NOT pushing for allegiance to a foreign country? Huh.

Of course, if anyone suggests that Chuckie be stripped of his committee memberships and his senate leadership post for being a racist Islamophobe, I would welcome the idea.

Good article. For a companion piece, read the Guardian analysis showing those who criticized Omar had taken large contributions from AIPAC, whereas those who defended her hadn’t. It’s all about the Benjamins baby.

Its not about Omar it’s about What they believe their God Wants .
It always has been.

Intrepid journalists should ask Schumer:

Please cite from the Torah: What would bring peace if only Arabs and Palestinians believed it?

What truths in the Torah would bring peace if only the Arabs and Palestinians believed them?

Hound him with it at every public appearance, every TV interview, every day in Congress.

Introduce resolutions in Congress condemning Schumer for asserting, not only that everyone should believe a specific religious text, but that US foreign policy should be based on what is written in an ancient religious text.

“Even if Omar did not do what people are saying she did, Olson…”

Why is Halper using this “if” construction?

It is unambiguous that Omar said nothing dual loyalty, or allegiance, of Jews in the USA Congress or American Jews in general.

Omar referenced compelled allegiance for all, in Congress by implication.

It is deeply unhelpful for Halper to imply there’s a question about what Omar said or meant.

Much better is Glenn Greenwald calling the House’s rebuke of Omar fraudulent:

Regards Jonathan Chait: I’m never clear why anyone treats that Iraq war liar seriously in 2019, or say back in 2015 when he was Bernie bashing. I don’t treat what Chait or the likes of Thomas Friedman have to say as valid. Right, even when Friedman accurately calls the influence of Israel in the Congress huge. Greenwald cites him doing so above

What if China and Russia joined forces and insisted that the Israeli / Palestine conflict end, and a final one or two country policy be adopted, there will be regime change in the U.S.?
And of course we are forced to denuclearize.
That’s a war nobody wants to fight.

Just look at the reaction from corporate media—Just look at the power Israel holds over Congress and the media. What would the Arab world look like if the US and England had not planted Israel in the home of Palestine just 70 yrs ago?

Can people see the RACISM—Palestinian vs. white European—the same thing happening in Venezuela----its brown vs. white—WE LIVE IN A CORPORATE MILITARY POLICE STATE!

85,000 DEAD CHILDREN IN YEMEN----THE PEOPLE OF THE US COULD STOP THIS. THE PEOPLE OF PALESTINE HELD CAPTIVE FOR 70 YEARS—THE PEOPLE OF THE US CAN BRING THIS TO AN END.
