Decrying Draft Deal that 'Fails Humanity,' COP21 Protesters Draw Red Line

Sarah Lazare, staff writer

People from around the world on Friday pulled a large "red line" through the entire stretch of the COP21 summit to register their outrage at politicians' failure to strike an ambitious draft climate deal—and to call for social movements in Paris and internationally to continue to take to the streets.

When a species fights itself to chose their own extinction or monetary profits for a few, the battle is already lost.

Tried to get our species to go against their natural instincts and DNA in the 60's. Lost then too.

Climate scientist Kevin Anderson said that because language on shipping and airlines has been removed the Paris Accord might be potentially weaker than the Copenhagen Accord negotiated in 2009. It must be discouraging that several years of building a climate movement seems to have achieved nothing at the international level. We still haven't seen the final text however so maybe there is still reason for hope.

In every nation, we see that the few control the many.

Eventually, they buy government, put their people in -- corporations merge into monopolies -- and they dictate to the public.

That's where we are now.

This is not the will of the people -- this is a liberal nation --

This is the will of the people being repeatedly ignored.

The only way the right wing can rise is by violence -- assassinations, propaganda of lies and deception, intimidation, stolen elections.

That's how it's done -- and always has been done.

#5

Don't know about hope, but i do know that the military, who s the largest non-state producer of GHGs, is exempt too.

#6

i agree the governments and MSM, are captured by the corporations. But they, and all countries have some people who benefit from the capitalist system, are also captured by
the elites and upwardly mobile [at least between their ears] whose unreal expectations of endless more and refusal of to even consider wanting less creates an echo chamber where only the snake oil sellers lies about middle class materialist fantasies being possible exist.

mr mud --

It's more than that --
From the beginning we've had a schizophrenic Constitution which fairly exclusively benefited white males of
property -- while bestowing land grants, influence and control over our natural resources to them -- and making
everyone else second or third class.
While enslaving Africans here -- and the native peoples in every land.
All blessed by Papal Edict -- "Enslave them or kill them."

This was all accomplished by violence -- extreme violence -- by the wealthy who already had control of our
government.
Also notice that here also religion/"Christianity" played a large role -- for instance, in the murderous and
abusive Church schools run for the government by the Catholic Church and Mormon Church which involved
changing the culture of native Americans, including by kidnapping and brain-washing their children forced into
these schools.

Organized patriarchal religion underpins patriarchy.
Christianity delivered "Manifest Destiny" and "Man's Dominion Over Nature" which were the licenses for the
rich to exploit Nature, Natural Resources, Animal-Life -- and even other human beings according to various myths
of "inferiority."

Christianity gave us Capitalism which they invented when Feudalism became insufficient to run their Papal
States.

Control of government isn't only the White House, Congress -- most of our elected officials.
It's every government agency --
It's our MIC and Intelligence Complex --

Neither is it only our media -- it is way beyond TV/Radio/Newspapers -- it is all of our periodicals, magazines,
publishing houses --
it is Hollwood which was happening long ago even before the McCarthy Era's attacks --
Look to the campaign against Henry Wallace (former VP to FDR who was removed 4 months before the death
of FDR) --
Wallace then ran an independent campaign for president based in part on EPIC -- End Poverty in California --
which was quickly met by a Hollywood produced campaign against him and EPIC.

Look at our music industry -- how many dead now -- ?

How are we so uncreative over the past decades that we must repeat the same productions over and again --
the only new creative work is based in violence and degradation.
See: "Everyday" with Liev Schrieber and Helen Hunt

Yes -- there are underlings -- like Scalia and Thomas who do their dirty work and profit from capitalism --
maybe beyond the 1% wealthy, another 12% or so in those along for the ride --

Look to WWII Germany as the pattern for violence and dirty tricks --
First thing the Russians said about 9/11 was: "The Reichstag Fire in NYC"
They had been very active in reporting intelligence of a planned attack to the White House and all of our
intelligence agencies because they especially feared they would be blamed. They even took their
intelligence info to the United Nations Security Council because it was being completely ignored by the
US government.
The United Nations -- in August before the 9/11 attack -- sent a team again to the White House and all of
the intelligence agencies with the information to insure that it was properly reported.

To think we could avoid all that with many frequent, secure, encrypted online voter initiatives and referendums that put the people in charge.

The US military would never be part of an international agreement. The US sets a target for emissions reductions and chooses how to reach it. Ships and planes travel between countries so they are a special category. No country can deal completely with those sources of emissions alone so they would have to be covered by an international agreement.

#10

Here's how the game works:

The Republicans flatly deny that climate change exists.

The Democrats come up with a plan to inhibit climate change, except it requires a large amount of unicorn blood to work. However, they don't deny that climate change exists.

MIC uses 80% of our oil -- No Oil = No War.

Oil is part of "national security" myth.

#12

It is not our natural instinct or in our DNA to make ourselves go extinct, think about profit or have rulers. Period. For 97-99% of our history as a species we lived sustainablly. Ask some indigenous people.

#13

Hmmm, i wonder why they dont just lie? Its not like they never lie... And say they will reduce emissions? Thats a win-win! Rulers happy people happy...well until... You know...
This must be so important they cant even bear to lie...

Still the truth evades... why not just do something about it?

I think we all know ....

#14

The US military itself uses around 2% of the oil used by the US economy. .

Of course we're ruled by our instincts, and civilization is a reflection of that. We're a pack animal. Pack animals have fights for the strongest to be leader. Any species, including insects and mammals, given the chance will destroy its source of sustenance.

#16

Errrnt...Wrong....
We are small group animals that are egalitarian. Weak "leaders" if they were deemed nessisary were decided by consensus, they did not rule, they seldom even took a strong stand. They helped faciltate the rare decision that needed to be made by the group. War chiefs were decided only in times of peril usually when at risk of anillation from civilization.
For 97-99 % of our species we lived without civilization. It was amazingly succesful, thousands of cultures existed into the modern era a few still survive.

The only species who has ever destroyed their basic sustance is a civilizaed homo sapien. Nature is opposite of destroy, it created more and more oppertunities for more life to exist.

#17

I think this is true but I also can see that Nature gives not one whiff for the individual as it is the species that are strengthened. Some humans and societies have run so far from this notion, making individuals mean everything, that now the species itself is threatened which bodes not well for these exalted individuals. Denying Nature only gets you so far and then you (we) crash and burn unless wiser heads prevail.
I think you made a very good point in another post where you asked why they don't just lie, agree to everything that sounds good to placate the masses whilst continuing business as usual. The PR would be fantastic yet they don't feel they need to even throw the people a bone. The rational mind cannot come to grips with this maniacal and self-destructive, deluded behaviour.
Personally I blame patriarchy and religions, when they are not one and the same, for starting and keeping this species on the road to glorifying death over life, relying on magical thinking, individual salvation by mystical forces, life after death - so don't worry about the here and now, subjugation of naature, women, and holding other living beings, including individual humans as property, etc. Reason has little effect on this kind of thinking. Yet, we must not stop trying to make a difference, IMHO.

"does it keep fossil fuels in the ground "

Re-phrase the question.

Does it keep London, Bangkok, Bangladesh, Calcutta, Shanghai, the Yellow River plains, the Red River Delta, Hanoi, Saigon, New Orleans (New Orleans? Who really cares? The USAian government doesn't), New York, Florida and.........and.............. and............. from being flooded?

#19

Any species that is not limited by natural predation will expand to the point that it destroys its own environment and collapses. It's called living in harmony with nature............

#20

On the other hand, consider the massive amounts of fossil fuels burned by all those who traveled to the protest. At least, the more modern nations strongly rely on mass transportation, something that Americans have rejected investing in for decades.
