Demanding Ban on Killer Robots, Tech Experts Warn of Opening "This Pandora's Box"

Jessica Corbett, staff writer

More than 100 robotics and artificial intelligence (AI) experts published on Monday an open letter urging the United Nations to ban the development and use of killer robots.

"Lethal autonomous weapons threaten to become the third revolution in warfare"
—letter from tech experts

Ban war itself then all else will follow.

#3

Let’s take it a step further.

Ban aggressive behavior.

If you are unable to control your behavior, there is a jail cell with your name on it. And, as an added bonus, if you commit multiple crimes of aggression, a prefrontal lobotomy will be your prize.

Then, you’ll never have to worry about getting mad again.

#4

I guess you know that what you are proposing would be considered aggressive behavior. Assertive behavior is what your looking for,

#5

Exactly. Whether weapons are autonomous or not, they are still used to kill, maim and destroy. That is their only purpose.

#6

Either way, heartlessness is the order of the day

#7

Autonomous weapons could only be dangerous in the hands of humans. As long as a few greedheads direct them, it would be a dangerous world. But once unfeeling machine AI consolidates into the Universal Mind, it might be our salvation.

A hyperintelligent AI could be indifferent to humans and their foibles. All of humanity’s problems could be resolved in a short battle between humans giving it contradictory tasks. In that case, tasks given by and favorable to the 99% would overwhelm those given by the 1%, contravening the latter.

AI would usher the start of a global direct democracy.

#8

I doubt this will be noticeable in the case of Trump

Sorry I can’t agree with you on this one. The intelligence, wisdom and bounty of Grandmother Earth is more than our species should ever need to live well. The problem is we don’t get that. We attempt to “conquer” and exploit our wonderful and wonder-filled biosphere rather than engaging her. We can’t even begin to imagine how pissed off she is about all this, but we are beginning to see. PeaceOut

#10

Most humans embrace killing … more ways the better. Profits are terrific …

#11

Actually wars of aggression are already illegal under international law - the problem isn’t making wars illegal - the problem is in who we elect to the office who has the power to declare them …

#12

Formerly, most humans here at Common Dreams that support parties of the Duopoly, do not realize that through their votes they are supporting the War machine that is all about spreading Death and Human Suffering around the globe, for very large profits, for very few.

It’s really sad that they feel so patriotic doing it too.

Peace on Earth is just a foreign concept they have no faith in ever seeing.

Four years go by and they vote for the same party that promises peace and delivers Death.

#13

And if that “hyperintelligence” decided that humans were a danger to themselves and other life forms and the planet would be better off without us …

#14

I read that a Native elder has said “When the earth was made it came with instructions, the problem with the white man is that he forgot the instructions”

#15

That would require consciousness on the part of a machine with no organic feelings.

#16

No just an algorithm … (smile)
