Destabilization of Arctic Sea Ice Would Be Game Over for Climate

Subhankar Banerjee

The Arctic sea ice is the most famous visual indicator of climate change. This year the climate deniers took the lead to explain what’s going on with the Arctic sea ice. “And now it’s global COOLING! Record return of Arctic ice cap as it grows by 60% in a year,” by David Rose in the Mail on Sunday, and “Global warming?

It isn't evil intent at work, no matter how much it begins to seem like it is. The Dark Side of the Force has not taken over ... No matter how much it might look like it is doing that very thing!

No! It is just plain old greed and decades of rationalizing the anti social attitudes inherent in capitalism. We lauded greed as good ( we lauded disco at the same time though a direct link is at best theoretical ) and bowed and scraped as oligarchy supplanted our democracy. Greed permitted everything! Heck we even have come up with a modern day heresy where the Jesus who announced that He came for the poor has been morphed into the Prosperity Gospel where making money is taken as a sign that God loves you. In a world of misery and suffering where hundreds of millions go to bed hungry, the message is that God loves those who are not poor. We create a profit motive Jesus because the Jesus who came for the poor sounded too much like a socialist for us Americans! Our heretical version of Jesus suits our thinking because Jesus came to make us wealthy. Praise be to that Greedspel of Prosperity and count your change!

We grow blind to anything but profit. Mammon above all others? We really do worship greed! We know that flaring will pollute. We know it could be collected and sold as fuel instead of flaring it into the atmosphere but that will only happen if there were a carbon tax. Then flaring would be unprofitable and they would collect the gas at the well head.

We know that exploiting the Arctic for fossil fuels will increase the rate of our own destruction but we become blind in the face of greed! We see only how much money can be made before regulations could be imposed that might protect the environment. We see only the raw greed and estimate how much money can be made while such regulations are delayed and worked around. Sure the environment should be saved so you go right ahead! We seek only to satisfy our need for greed and so then saving the world is just not profitable. Not even close!

That Dark Side taking over thing? It really does look like it doesn't it?
