Don’t Forget: Nuclear Weapons Are an Existential Threat

Take the matches of the children and throw away your own matches .

I am a nuclear veteran. I was exposed to seven H-Bombs, including the US first air drop of a multi-megaton weapon. I nearly died from my exposure. I pretty well recovered, but many did not. I was seventeen years old at the time and didn’t expect to live out my twenties. Yes, nuclear weapons of any type are an existential threat. And there are very few nuclear veterans left to bear witness to their horror.

I Have Seen the Dragon

I have seen the Dragon
Through clenched lids and arms pressed tight.
I have felt its hot breath on my back
And listened to the rumble of its voice.

I have looked upon its breath,
Glowing Amethyst, red and purple,
Climbing towards the stratosphere
To deposit its venom downwind.

I have waited in fear as my gums began to bleed
And my hair came out in clumps.
I breathed a prayer of thanks
As I began to heal.

After fifty years, our ranks are thin,
We who have seen the Dragon and survived.
Those who have died or are sickened still,
Their numbers are legion.

All we can hope for, work for, pray for,
Is that no madman will ever be allowed
To unleash the Dragon again.
For its legacy to all is death, disease and decay.

Indeed, Nuclear Weapons Are an Existential Threat.
We the People of the World need to ban them totally.

Maybe we can start by removing our 50 nuclear war heads from Turkey.

Yes, we should definitely reduce the number of nuclear weapons in the world, because climate catastrophe is dramatically increasing the likelihood of nuclear war along with all other wars.
