Earth Might Be Warming, Pruitt Finally Admits, But Would Be 'Arrogant' for Humanity to Act to Stop It

Julia Conley, staff writer

Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) head Scott Pruitt argued in at least two recent interviews that green groups, scientists, and other advocates working to slow the climate crisis are "arrogant" in saying that humans should work to keep the earth from warming.

"Do we know what the ideal surface temperature should be in the year 2100 or year 2018?" he said in an interview with News 3 in Las Vegas on Wednesday. "It's fairly arrogant for us to think we know exactly what it should be in 2100."

we must do something besides sitting on our hands when they call for volunteers to help with this problem. unfortunately too many think that the end of this world is closer then ever and refuse to think of their grand and great grandchildren. are you drinking fresh water? have food in your gut? a roof over your head? how do you deny these simple things to other generations? we can try…put a brick in a toliet tank, walk more or schedule your outings, don’t leave your car running while you stop at a store…it can be these things that make a difference.

#3

Well, Mr Pruitt, if you want to commit suicide, please go right ahead - we would be better off without you. The problem is that you will take many of us with you.

#4

The Ecocide Protection Agency is hard at work here, under Scott Pruitt’s arrogant direction.

#5

Why would there be consistency amongst different people’s, different arguments? I can see critiquing a single person’s self contradictory arguments, but across a bunch of folks you’re going to get a range of arguments.

His argument is correct…there is no way to know what the ‘correct’ temperature ‘should’ be, even absent the claimed human influence, because the climate has and does continuously vary anyway, including being warmer earlier in the current interglacial.

#6

God these people are so fucking insane.

#7

Life, as we humans know it, can only exist within a very small range of temperatures. To think otherwise is folly.

#8

Boy, did Pruitts parents waste a lot of money on his education.

#9

No. 4 degrees Celsius is 7.2 degrees Fahrenheit. How did this become 39 degrees Fahrenheit? But better yet, Common Dreams needs to join the rest of the world, and avoid this error by not mentioning Fahrenheit degrees at all. Let the older, non-immigrant USAn readers figure it out themselves…

Edit: Oh, it appears the author confused absolute temperature with degrees of temperature. A temperature of 4C is 39 F. So now the question becomes: Why are activists and journalists on the US-left so mathematically illiterate?

#10

Arrogance? The arrogance has been on the part of western (industrial) societies for their actions. Even more arrogance on the part of the fossil fuel corporations who has known what they are doing to Earth’s environments since at least the 1980s and not only have done nothing to address it, but actively hid it. Arrogance on the part of Scott Pruitt for doing everything he can to undermine any efforts to do anything about climate change.

#11

Perhaps someone needs to assist Pruitt with his suicide attempt.

Any volunteers?

The correct temperature is a relative term but for our purposes it is about what the temperature was for the past two thousand years until the recent spike that occurred following the beginning of the industrial age. The hockey stick graphs clearly show the spike and as steep as slope is it will like get even much steeper during the next several decades and perhaps beyond. The rise in temperature will increase the rate of sea level rise and increase the likelihood of extreme weather events. It is all physics and scientific understanding of the natural systems that affect the climate. Pruitt’s view is consistent with fascism in which there is no truth except for what the leader says is the truth. Are you lining up to follow that?

#13

Scientific/Mathematical literacy, who needs it? We can buy that from lower paid H1-B visa holders. USA, USA, USA! We are blessed by God directly, that’s all one needs to know.

Peace.
ths.

#14

Oh Yunzer, another thing. Isn’t Common Dreams in good company here with NASA?

Peace.
ths.

#15

Try arguing with gravity sometime.

Peace.

#16

So it is arrogant for us to stop climate change that we so arrogantly are causing, wow, that’s just arrogant.

#17

Pruitt seems to offer proof that it is ignorance which produces “arrogance.”

Either the real ignorance of not understand Global Warming, or the feigned ignorance
which allows him to deny Global Warming.

#18

Idiotic. While I can see the point that it might likely be too late to stop the runaway climate meltdown it is not arrogant to try. Even if we have to go into the still night, the least we can do is have some dignity and responsibility to try to do the best we can to solve this seemingly insurmountable problem.

#19

I have never seen that mistake made before in temperature. It looks like CD has broken new ground here in the annals of journalism. I don’t have a problem with CD mentioning Fahrenheit in addition to Celsius. It is commonly used in the US and helps us understand differences in temperature.

Occam –

That’s nonsense … in fact, on the few occasions when our news reporters haven’t been
intimidated, they have confirmed for us at given times that we are 25 degrees or more
OVER normal. Citizens also have memories. New York and New Jersey kids understand
that their parents didn’t used to wear shorts at Christmas time. Every year we are set new
records for heat. And, actually, there was a 50 year gap in our actually feeling the effects
of Global Warming which means that right now we are only feeling the effects of human
activity on the planet up to about 1968. STOP eating animals. START demanding higher
MPG performance by car manufacturers. Here’s the point – you life is at stake and so is
your children’s. Fight back like you actually know that…!!

We also know what ocean levels are and that they are rising – and that if Greenland goes
our oceans will rise 20 feet.

Meanwhile, isn’t this guy from ExxonMobil … sorry I didn’t check before I began this post.

Since when has ExxonMobil told the truth about anything, leave alone Global Warming.
And ExxonMobil has confirmed in correspondence that they recognized the threat of Global
Warming two decades ago – 40 years – despite the fact that they continued on with their
$50 BILLION campaign to lie to the American public about Global Warming.

And, by 2006, ONLY the UK’s Royal Academy of Science had called out ExxonMobil on their
propaganda campaign to lie to the public about Global Warming. Imagine that!

Actually, much of ExxonMobil’s lies were told on the Op-Ed pages of the NY Times which gave
it space there to run their “ad-editorials” lying to the public about GW – and which couldn’t be
replied to by any means … as they were protected from any challenge by the NY Times which
claimed them as “advertisements.”

Scott Pruitt’s Crimes Against Nature

Trump’s EPA chief is gutting the agency, defunding science and serving the fossil-fuel industry

“The appointment of Scott Pruitt as EPA administrator is as serious a threat to our environment as we’ve ever faced," says Michael Brune, executive director of the Sierra Club. "Pruitt’s entire career represents the exact opposite of the EPA’s mission, which is to protect us from the reckless polluters and the disastrous consequences of climate change.”

While the rest of the Trump administration has been mired in scandal or incompetence (or both), and the media has been distracted by the Republican health care debacle and daily revelations about the Trump family’s involvement with the Russians, Pruitt has been quietly tearing down decades of environmental progress. “If there was ever an example of the fox guarding the henhouse, this is it,” says Michael Mann, a noted climate scientist at Penn State University. “We have a Koch-brothers-connected industry shill who is now in charge of climate and environmental policy for the entire country.”

To help with his cause, Pruitt brought in a team of experienced EPA-bashers and climate-change obstructionists, many of whom have worked for Oklahoma Sen. James Inhofe, the most notorious and flamboyant climate denier in Congress. (Inhofe once brought a snowball to the Senate floor as evidence that global warming isn’t real.) Pruitt’s favored pick for deputy administrator, Andrew Wheeler, worked for Inhofe early in his career, then became a lobbyist for coal magnate Bob Murray, among others. Ryan Jackson, Pruitt’s chief of staff, was formerly Inhofe’s chief of staff. “He brought in the climate-denial all-stars,” says Frank O’Donnell, head of Clean Air Watch, a climate and anti-pollution advocacy group in Washington, D.C.

If you can stand it … here’s some more on Pruitt …

Scott Pruitt’s record reveals a long history of industry favoritism

As Oklahoma’s Attorney General, Pruitt has a history of slowing environmental regulation, cutting enforcement, and siding with industry.

Senators dig into Scott Pruitt’s fossil fuel connections before confirmation hearings begin

Pruitt is an active member of the Rule of Law Defense Fund, which has received $175,000 from the Koch brothers.

Americans need to begin to act in self-defense cause their lives are at stake.
