Again, Mr. Kohler, thank you for your humanity and your wisdom.
In this furious current storm of economic instability – a game of musical chairs, actually – people are seeking places where they feel protected, sheltered. If they have privileges, they are trying to protect them as well. We are watching the acting-out of a ZERO-SUM mentality, the idea that holds that if some prosper, others must suffer.
If only we could get Irish-Americans to remember how their ancestors were treated like insects under British colonial rule, deported to the West Indies for indentured servitude for the least infraction or resistance, forced under gunpoint to give up their land and to become renters in Ireland . . . maybe they’d feel a connection to African-Americans, who were enslaved and shipped to the same West Indies and turned into property . . . .
If only we could get German-Americans to remember how their ancestors had to leave the German states after the failed revolutions of 1848, or how those ancestors were squeezed by rapacious conditions of tenancy by princely, noble, and clerical landlords in Bavaria, Prussia and Wuerttemberg . . . .
If only we could get Jewish-Americans to remember how their ancestors faced segregation, economic and legal discrimination, and lynching and near-genocide across Europe in centuries past . . . .
If only we could get white people to realize that our higher standard of living was the result of centuries of Indian removal and slavery and Jim Crow here, and of the looting of nonwhites elsewhere around the globe, and of a series of incredible lucky accidents of history . . . .
AND that it is not a edict of “Natural Law” that we must live in a dog-eat-dog world . . . .
Thank you CT. Your comment is wise and well thought out. I agree with you
and admire your intelligence as well as your humanity.
