Every Olympic Athlete in Pyeongchang Should Be Vocal About Climate Change

Auden Schendler

At a cross-country ski area outside of Carbondale, Colo., the thin track was recently refreshed with a meager two inches of snow. Yet people were out in droves, delighting in all manner of snow sliding. It was a hot January day, so blistering that a local rancher called it beautiful "for April."

And who the hell is Auden Schendler to decide for other people what they should or shouldn’t do?   While I do agree that Climate Change is going affect nearly all of us in mostly negative ways (except maybe the denizens of Siberia, which IMHO will soon be the new Kansas), it’s up to each individual athlete to decide for himself or herself whether to be involved in the effort to educate the masses.  If Schendler cares so much, (s)he can buy
a ticket to South Korea and display a big sign outside one of the stadiums rather than pontificating about what other people should (or shouldn’t) do.

They might be thinking about peace, and stopping nuclear war. War is the biggest waste of money, dwarfing winter weather. It is the biggest world polluter and destroyer of the environment.
And they might be thinking about a peaceful Korea.

All of these issues are worth a John Carlos/Tommy Smith moment! Can you imagine the look on Pence’s face?
