'Far Past Time' to Abolish the Electoral College, Progressives Say as Colorado Approves National Popular Vote Compact

How does one get Republicans on board with this kind of reform? Why would they agree to it, when they’ve lost 7 of the last 8 popular votes? What’s in it for them?

Lines in the sand are what have killed so many.
Lines in the sand.
The Electoral College is based on lines in the sand.
Just saying.

For years, the real GOP base has been dwindling. Not that we could really tell that from this last election, but it’s actually true.

Back when Dubya ran on his “Compassionate Conservatism” BS, I read an essay in the American Prospect that still sticks with me. Basically it indicated that the GOP only did as well as they did by adopting DNC party lines. Not that they actually intended to implement any of these things, but to actually get people to vote for them, they had to sound a bit democrat.

An article around the same time period in the same periodical said that with the successful gerrymandering the GOP had accomplished, the DNC was crippled for at least 1 to 2 decades - UNLESS the GOP did something like self-destruct.

A few short years later, Obama got elected on “Hope and Change.” They had blown it that badly, those GOPers. (My big gripe here is Obama tried to give the GOP everything they wanted, but they blocked and obstructed him anyway).

The GOP cannot let the Electoral College go. They are and continue to be a minority party with little to no chance of taking the WH without the EC.

It’s Tyranny by the Minority.

Try to get any of them to admit it, though. Nope, instead we get pure BS about how “without the EC this country will become a radical leftist socialist nightmare. The Electoral College is why American Democracy works!”

WTF?

But . . .   But . . .   Without the Electoral College there would hardly be ANY suspense AT ALL.   How in Hell would the MSM survive without all the Million$ they rake in from advertisements during the campaigns, not to mention the wind-
fall from this past week of results trickling in??

Good article, The most egregious thing about the electoral college is the electors are appointed, not elected. Way past time to abolish this asinine electoral college.

We are not living in a Democratic Country until we have Majority Wins Elections.

America is not a Third World country and we should abide by the rules of a true Democracy: Majority Rules, The Most Good For The Most People.

Enough already with this nonsensical system called the Electoral College. We need a system that is simple and fair and actually represents the true Majority of We The People.

The same is true with the Senate: We cannot allow a Legislative Branch of Government that allows Minority Rule.

Montana has a population of 1 Million People and 2 Senators with the same power as California that also has 2 Senators but represents 40 Million People.

Wyoming also has 2 Senators and represents 550 Thousand People, while New York is represented by 2 Senators that represent 19.4 Million People.

Progressives must put an end to a government with Minority Rule and become a Democracy where Majority Rules.

This Progressive is tired of being ruled by a couple of extreme Conservatives that only represent a handful of people, while we, the true majority are prevented from becoming a Progressive Civilized Nation.

Instead of being ruled by a handful Religious Fanatics, like Justice Scalia and now Justice Barrett, who use Biblical Law to pass judgement instead of Constitutional Law, time to become a True Democracy, Trash the Electoral College and adopt a system of Majority Rules.

Maybe tortuous experience?

The President of Citizens United, David Bossie, has tested positive for the virus:

David Bossie, who just days ago was tapped to handle President Donald Trump’s effort to challenge the results of the presidential election, has tested positive for the coronavirus.

Guess he’s out of it. You remember Citizens United, right?

Love how they’ve chosen a non-lawyer to head up their legal challenges. Suspect most who passed the BAR would have to take a pass. No legal challenge to make.

It’s become a comedy of errors only those in the Third Reich could chuckle over, and then only if they were somewhat self-aware.

Ominous news, Esper fired as SOD and very right wing Miller appointed. Hope this is not a Trump strategy move to counter the election.

The next step then is to do away with the US Senate which gives massive representation to citizens of small states. But to eliminate the Electoral College is a great start. Strange to hear from many who are fine with a “democracy” based on the rule of a minority of citizens.

Agreed. This system really just provides entitlement (and all the sinister trappings of) to a minority ruling class.

It’s a bit like South Africa under Apartheid claiming to be a free and democratic country.

But our propaganda continues to be the best ever.

A parliamentary system could also help.

Agree – and we should notice that GOP gained ground in Governorships
and in legislatures across the nation –
Some of that comes from Green Party Report as I have not actually looked
at the overall wins by GOP across the nation.

However, it is time for the Electoral College which was meant to “unite” the
nation and which has only “divided” it since then to be ended.

No member of any state should have a vote worth more than any member of
another state and that’s what happens with the Electoral College.

One of the primary reasons for the Electoral College was to up the power of
states where their slaves were only counted as 3/4ths of a person.
Time to end any advantages to states which were once involved in the slave trade.

Imagine if the Dem Party had at any time of its majority control over government
had treated the GOP as the GOP has been treating Democrats?

They would have been bombing the Capitol – shouting and screaming – threatening
everywhere.

WHY is the DP response so milquetoast – so ineffective – can we really believe that
it’s genuine?

How many states will now follow Colorado?

There must have been many discussions among states about this?

SEQUOIA – WONDERFUL POST – THANK YOU!!

Think the Constitution says 2 Senators in each state – but in order to beat that I think
California would go North California/South California – We could do same in NJ –
and Boston could go East and West – etal –

And maybe there are some better, other ideas here?

Their just deserts?
