Feminism Will Not Be Weaponized for Trump's War on Immigrants

Yifat Susskind
We know that violence against women occurs in every country, class and culture. The White House is using this issue, in a racialized context, to close the door on immigrants.
"The root cause of gender-based violence is the same everywhere—it is gender discrimination, not culture, that drives violence against women." (David Maialetti / The Philadelphia Inquirer via AP)

Yep, it’s the ‘damsels in distress’ argument, the big strong men will protect the ‘weaker sex.’ No thanks.

One can’t help but admire Trump’s ability to slyly mutate the message of an evolving movement to suit his goals on another agenda. The, “jello” effect?

He’s not smart enough to be sly or to follow agendas. He just thinks from his genitals and says whatever rises to his lips (or his twitter fingers).

Don’t know if Freire had women in mind when he wrote “Pedagogy of the Oppressed,” but this quote stands out in my mind: “It is only the oppressed who, by freeing themselves, can free their oppressors. The latter, as the oppressive class, can neither free others nor themselves. It is therefore essential that the oppressed wage the struggle to resolve the contradiction in which they are caught, and the contradiction will be resolved with the appearance of the new man: neither oppressor nor oppressed, but man in the process of liberation.” Granted it’s not gender-neutral prose but it has the right idea: this patriarchal system cannot liberate women, we must liberate ourselves, ON OUR OWN TERMS.
