Five Grandmothers Arrested in Morning Blockade that Successfully Stalled Work on Shell’s Polar Pioneer Seattle Port Commission Meeting Ends in Rough Removal of Attendees
WASHINGTON - This morning, groups of activists stalled work on Shell’s Arctic drilling rig, the Polar Pioneer. Protesters blocked three access points to Terminal 5, where the rig sits in violation of city permits, locking themselves together with concrete-filled mock oil barrels and a disabled vehicle. Five grandmothers of Seattle’s “Raging Grannies” locked themselves to rocking chairs. The blockades prevented dozens of vehicles from entering the terminal, disrupting the flow of the morning’s work and ended only when police prepared to make arrests.
