Foreign Aid That Costs an Arm and a Leg — Literally

Foreign Aid That Costs an Arm and a Leg — Literally

Phyllis Bennis

My friend Andrew Rubin is an amputee. He’s lost his right hand, lower arm, right foot, and lower leg.

He used to be an avid runner and cyclist. He can’t do much of that anymore, although his walking is getting much better. Soon he might be able to run with his artificial leg.

Andrew is incredibly lucky.

The House just passed the Global Fragility Act of 2019 (H.R.2116) and now goes to the Senate (S.727).
Friends Committee on National Legislation has a letter campaign set up to urge Senators to support the Senate version.

I think we already have an amputation crisis…among our own military sent to fight undeclared foreign wars.

Doctor Tarek Loubani of London, Ontario, reported after being shot by Israeli snipers a year ago that they deliberately targeted protesters’ (including medics’) legs. Not out of some twisted humanitarian impulse, you may be sure, but to engage and preoccupy support networks on the field, in hospitals and at home. Snipers = sociopathic war criminals indifferent to others’ pain and suffering – but their superior officers and politicians are just as culpable.
