In an acknowledgement of the severity of the climate crisis, officials from the some of the world's leading economic powers on Monday issued a joint statement calling for a "decarbonization of the global economy over the course of this century."
Decarbonize by the end of the century? Gee, what's their hurry? I actually feel embarrassed for them for making such a lame statement. As for sending shivers down the spine of the fossil fuel industry, give me a break. More likely the G7 leaders and fossil rule execs are laughing it up over drinks about the way they duped everyone, once again, into thinking they actually give a damn about the environment. The G7 countries and their leaders ARE the fossil rule industry. The article is a complete piece of political fluff, something that is becoming a trademark of CD.
Good news makes bad copy.
Earth's ecosystems will be a smoking ruin by then. But it does allow people to feel a release of guilt and go spend doesn't it because our "leaders" will take care of us and the Earth. Such good parents for us children. And I agree some of the articles in CD need to be more clear seeing and not positivistic pablum which in a sense is akin to the pablum served up by actors like the G7.
We need revenue-neutral carbon taxes to level the playing field.
Plus the weasel way they phrase their "commitment":
"... doing our part to achieve a low-carbon global economy in the long-term, including developing and deploying innovative technologies striving for a transformation of the energy sectors by 2050..."
"Imagining a magical technical fix that will be painless and require no difficult decisions on our part. Any difficult decisions we will continue to postpone, awaiting our magical technical fix..."
On an escalator.
del for error made
The shares of Exxon reacted to the news today with a .5 percent climb. Some shiver. I am sure the Politicians were all on the phone to their Constituents in big oil to reassure them on the true nature of this "announcement" even as they asked for donations for their next campaign.
Yes, jneastra, these old political puppets and pawns of the Disguised Global Crony-Capitalist Empire will all be dead and buried after funerals in thousands of oil-belching Cadillacs carry them to the happy hunting grounds of K Steet (and Wall Street) champion looters if 'we the people' have to wait for this theiving Global Empire to voluntarily stop its economic Empire deceit of making faux-profits by burning up our planet and dumping their 'negative externality costs' on us, the U.S., and our world.
This death-spiraling EMPIRE of Corruption must be recognized, diagnosed, 'exposed', publicly 'shouted-down', and successfully confronted in a Second American Revolution against Empire (like the first) ---- and when/IF Bernie gets honest, 'grows some', and commits to be the Anti-EMPIRE candidate that he should be, then the effing Disguised Global Crony-Capitalist Empire and all its neocon 'R' Vichy party political liars and all the neoliberal-con 'D' Vichy party's smoother lying shills will go down with their stinkin' TCC (transnational capitalist class) EMPIRE.
"The U.S. state is a key point of condensation for pressures from dominant groups around the world to resolve problems of global capitalism and to secure the legitimacy of the system overall. In this regard, “U.S.” imperialism refers to the use by transnational elites of the U.S. state apparatus to continue to attempt to expand, defend, and stabilize the global capitalist system. We are witness less to a “U.S.” imperialism per se than to a global capitalist imperialism. We face an EMPIRE of global capital , headquartered, for evident historical reasons, in Washington." Agreed. Nothing but smoke and mirrors.
