No racism and bigotry, no Bush presidency.
While Juan Cole is right that Bush has used racism for political purposes, still his attacks on Trump with regard to racism are on target and important because there may be Republicans out there who will be influenced by his remarks. These Republicans are not going to listen a Bernie Sanders or Hillary Clinton saying basically the same thing. While both Sanders and Clinton to have standing to make such remarks Republicans, however, will tune them out immediately and see their remarks as partisan politics. This fight against white nationalism, which is something Bush does not support, needs as many people from both sides of the political divide as possible to win. The winds of white nationalism are blowing strong these days and anyone voicing opposition to this movement aimed at undermining Western democracies should be listened to even if to some extent we find their words to be hypocritical.
