Get Children Out of Cages at the Border and Into School

There are still an estimated 12,000,000 undocumented men, women and children in the U.S. and it is appalling that this should be an issue of such complexity. There are simple legal procedures that would avoid all this, including separation (with the exception of unaccompanied minors) Children are not suppose to be in border patrol custody more than 27 days for illegal entry. It is a crime to send your children to another country even if they have a note attached and someone is paid to take them there. All this could be avoided. I find it hard to advocate for continuing this system as it currently exists. F*** Trump, that is not the issue.

As a student of US history you probably know something of the trauma that was caused Native Americans by the practice of forcably taking kids from their homes and putting them into missionary-run schools. So I am mystified as to why in your recent article you propose to do the exact same thing to kids stolen from their mothers and fathers at the border. Your article seems to attempt to NORMALIZE that illegal and inhumane practice by saying all we need to do now is put the kids into schools and decent institutional or foster care. NO. Those kids need to be returned to their families. How can they possibly concentrate on learning when all they can think about is their families? Think of the emotional toll of thinking every minute of the day what their worried mothers might be thinking, not knowing if they are dead or alive, who are hearing how bad their kids are being treated in the US. Please don’t try to normalize this kind of brutality by assuming the kids are ours now and ignoring their daily trauma.

Good point Ravine.
