Golden Shower Diplomacy and the Hidden Meaning of American Decline

Alfred W. McCoy

Month by month, tweet by tweet, the events of the past two years have made it clearer than ever that Washington’s once-formidable global might is indeed fading. As the American empire unravels with previously unimagined speed, there are many across this country’s political spectrum who will not mourn its passing. Both peace activists and military veterans have grown tired of the country’s endless wars. Trade unionists and business owners have come to rue the job losses that accompanied Washington’s free-trade policies.

Thank you Professor McCoy for a balanced and much-needed History lesson. It is too easy in this time of chaos and division to lose sight of all the positive things that this country and its citizens have done, and to fixate on the negative things only. Reality is much more complex than that. It is vitally important for all of us, especially now, to see the larger picture, to work to
change some things sooner, and other things later. We must not fall into an “all-or-nothing” mindset. The process of de-Imperialism does not mean that we should forsake all of our values. We should never stop positive and constructive engagement with the rest of the world, and with each other. We must not let this “MAGA” mindset define us. Too many have worked too hard and given too much, to just throw it away.

This an excellent piece that takes into account most or all of the variables we are facing. Nobody can realistically say what is going to come next with any certainty. What one voice can say is opinion on what’s already happened. I see Trump doing permanent damage to our credibility. It’s not something most people want to think about, but already he tainted in his vulgar way so many of our country’s relationships with other states that took decades to establish and are delicate in their own way.
Trump did the unthinkable–he’s reviled in the mother country, Britain, and really is not welcome there. Whether one is fond of our ties to England or not, it’s a very strong archetype and he crossed it; I think the writing is on the wall.

So who dreamed up the vulgar and grotesque headline was it McCoy, Tomdispatch, or CD? And the disgusting photo that accompanied it–whose bright idea was that? Much has been written and opined on the decline of the US–such vulgar allusions are just pouring gasoline on the raging flames of destruction.

There is a glaring omission in McCoy’s article. The environmental history of the American influenced 20th century western civilization. An environmental impact ignored by most all social and economic commentators who all have grown up accepting economic and technological expansion as normal progression of civilization. Technological advances, that in the short term has made life easy for ONLY humans, are wiping out the very ecological support systems of the earth that were the bedrock of massive growth of humans on the planet. Most every good deed accounted for in the article carried out by middle class citizens in America was funded out of their own pocket based on a growing availability of extra cash available to them . As the capital economy of the American middle class contracts, which it has, is doing and will continue to do, middle class care and concern for the lower class in America, and of the world more so, will turn inward as members of the middle class will join their fellow lower. The American lifestyle, both of affordable abundance and economic dependence on endless consumption, won’t grow, or last . It is not even sustainable since it is based on limited fossil fuel and the dependent growth of its use, coupled with America’s matured and aging capital economic model! To ignore that fact is to embrace the suicidal corporate driven Trump’ian concept of “Make America Great Again”. The American bath water needing to be thrown out along with its water spoiling babies is water ruined by infants refusing to grow up.

The sanctimony here is enough to make me puke. A little religious charity here & there, maybe saving 20,000 or 500,000 people, doesn’t make up for killing 20% of North Korea or 3 million Vietnamese or a million Iraqis, not to mention wrecking Afghanistan, Libya, Syria, Central America, etc.

US Hegemony was always about power. US entered WW2 not to save Jews & Roma from the Nazis, but to advance the interests of power.

BTW, religious aid often comes at the price of being sermonized. Religious groups provide aid mostly because they want to convert people. Spiritual imperialism.

Thanks Mr McCoy, for yet another whitewash of US history.

I am so glad to see dissent in this thread. Chest thumping about missionaries pre-Theology of Liberation BY A PROFESSOR OF HISTORY is a cheapening of reality beyond words.

There is no “delicate duality” in or of US “dominion”. How quaint that DOMINATION is regarded by a history professor as ‘dominion’. It would be dominion IF there were NOT a commensurate number of black-ops, with dark budgets- DAMN- tell mr. professor: What is the Pentagon budget for this year and all preceding years?

And just to set another, earlier aspect of the record straight: a tad itty bit about the DOCTRINE OF DISCOVERY:

I’m guessing the DNC. It’s to make associations with the vulgar and grotesque in your mind when you think of Trump- as if we don’t already. They’ve pulled this before. It’s a crafted mental propaganda piece masquerading as a liberal op ed piece.

" Anti-globalization protesters and pro-Trump populists alike cheered the president’s cancellation of the Trans-Pacific Partnership. "

Yep, it’s the people destroying us who financed this piece. The Transpacific partnership was downright evil. It took all power to regulate corporations, away from us. We had to pay all monies they didn’t make into the future of what they were prevented to make, if we passed any laws regulating them that impacted profits. NATO - which this writer supports is equally disasterous. Goto tradewatch.org. This writer is a shill for the oligarcy and it’s only a subliminal in-put piece to people who read it because they want trump out and they want to make mental associations in our brains to affect what we think.

" Whatever Obama did, Trump seems determined to undo with a visceral vehemence: the Trans-Pacific trade pact (torn up), the Paris climate accord (withdrawn), the Iran nuclear freeze (voided), close relations with NATO allies (damaged), diplomatic relations with Cuba (frozen), Middle Eastern military withdrawal (reversed), ending the Afghan war (cancelled), the diplomatic pivot to Asia (forgotten), and so on into what already seems like an eternity."

He throws in massively corrupt trade agreements with positive movements so we’ll associate them with the positive movements - the writer is doing satans job.

I skipped to the end - it’s even an anti Russia propaganda piece.

" If, by contrast, the golden-shower diplomacy of Donald Trump (subliminal association repeatedly made in article) continues, while the Chinese and Russian versions of hegemony only gain strength, (Fear Russia oh, AND China - Russia’s ally if they go to war with us - pact made a year and a half ago) then we will likely witness a harsher world order based on autocracy, Realpolitik, and commercial domination, with scant attention to human rights, women’s rights, or the rule of law. At this critical turning point in world history, the choice is still, to a surprising degree, ours to make. But not for long.(so the point - vote Dem, sink in all the subliminal associations and start chanting things like trade agreements are good, Russia is bad)"

Perhaps this propaganda inspire some Neo-Nazi to shed light on the better aspects of the Nazi Germany against a “worse”(?) alternative, US: “See, what a mess you’re in without us.”

Well, obviously he too needs to admit some wrongdoings of the Nazi Germany so as to sound objective; otherwise how could he normalise and legitimize the evil, paint the wolf in sheep’s clothing as sheep in wolf’s clothing?

Indeed, what would we do without our benevolent tormentors? Yet, go and try to tell all this to those tortured, slaughtered children, women, men, whole nations and finally the world itself?
