Warm thanks for your union service in Nevada, Rebecca Gordon. Nevada’s COVID outbreak is symbolic of the national outbreak in several respects. For one thing, Nevada’s new-cases trajectory has nearly the same three-surge structure as the trajectory of USA. On the psychological level, Nevada is the hospitality state, naturally prone to the Jaws Syndrome (shark? what shark?) in order to keep any semblance of economic activity afloat.

There’s a key distinction in Nevada, where positivity has surpassed 1/4 of tests, on its way to 1/3. Factoring positivity with how far the current new-cases level is from the pre-October peak, the dozen states in the most trouble, most of them heartland states, bubble to the top:

> 10/17 avg
> positivity % ofpeak %
> 1. Wyoming 19.6 388.0
> 2. Wisconsin 24.6 291.7
> 3. South Dakota 36.7 191.9
> 4. Iowa 49.5 93.7
> 5. Nebraska 18.0 203.2
> 6. Idaho 26.3 118.9
> 7. Utah 16.2 183.4
> 8. Montana 10.4 230.6
> 9. Indiana 11.7 170.3
> 10. Kansas 17.4 117.4
> 11. Nevada 28.7 51.9
> 12. North Dakota 9.7 151.2
> 13. New Mexico 6.3 157.1

Nevada’s trajectory doesn’t appear to be peaking as severely as the other leaders, but its positivity – beyond alarming – moves it into eleventh place.
