Last winter, at the Voices home/office in Chicago, we welcomed two friends who were in town for a Mennonite church gathering focused on the symbol of beating swords into plowshares. Their project embraces a vision from the biblical “Book of Isaiah” which longs for the day when “they shall beat their swords into plowshares and their spears into pruning hooks: nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they study war anymore.” Our friends quite literally enact this vision.
If God has spent millennia without beating swords into plowshares, maybe it’s time to put ourselves to the task.
Thank you, Kathy. Nice piece as usual. Peace be unto you.
I have the utmost respect for Kathy Kelly. But unfortunately, the last thing the US government wants is …PEACE.
Love the Mennonites. Wherever there is a war protest or peace rally you will find Mennonites.
Our love of war will be our hell, our eternal condemnation, our epitaph from future generations we have condemned to suffer because of our hate and greed.
There was a similar incident some years in the UK when some peace activists used hammers to damage some aircraft being sent to Indonesia and which could be used against West Papuans who are still seeking independence. The indicted activists used the same defence as it seems Kathy Kelly is planning.
The jury declared them innocent as they had acted in a just and moral cause.
Blessed are the peacemakers for theirs is the courage of the heart. Jessica is a young woman of such courage and one of those rare individuals who are called Great Souls.
